Star this if you like it!
Me and a couple mates from the Uk all 23 are planning on heading to USA in March 2013
We want to see as much as possible, go where all the good nightlife is (love a drink) and have a laugh.
If anyone can start throwing some idea's about that would be great. We have looked into the possiblity of driving down the west coast starting in Vancouver. But not sure two weeks would be enough!
Cheers,
Andy

I think your idea is pretty good, but I would avoid the Interstate highways (which by the way is often near impossible). You see zero from the Interstates, but they are fast! The car rental agencies will charge plenty for a one way rental - the drop charge is huge! You might take the train from Vancouver stopping in Seattle, Portland and Eugene. From there you might rent a car, see the Oregon Coast, drive to San Francisco, and then return the car back to Oregon (much cheaper). You could then fly to San Diego for beach time (you missed nothing in Los Angeles).
The Coast is where's it's happening! It can be done in 2 wks. My favorites are San Francisco, Monterey Peninsula (100 mi south of SF), the Oregon Coast and San Diego.
If you're strapped for cash, I recommend the Green Tortoise bus tours out of Seattle - believe they have roundtrip tours to California.
I live in Portland, but spent 25 yrs in SF, and far too much time in LA!
Portland is Beer Heaven - microbreweries all over this area, and it's quite a mecca for your age group (it's also the cheapest large city on the West Coast)

thanks for your response.
if you were to spend three weekends down the west coast where would you stay for those weekends taking into account vibrant nightlife?
also the fact we are looking to go during spring break will that have an effect on anything?

If you really want great nightlife, vere off that path on the west coast a bit, and head to Las Vegas. If you have never been, you will be in absolute heaven. The party literally never stops there. Hollywood is also a good place to check out as well.

I suggest the following places (in the US):
(1) Kirkland, Washington or else the restaurants in Seattle, Washington that surround Lake Union
(2) Santa Barbara, CA--especially in the summertime--State Street or else near Goleta (near University of California, Santa Barbara)
(3) Newport Beach, CA (even better than Hollywood in my opinion--at least in the summertime--also check out the Universal Citywalk in Irvine, CA). Trust me, the ladies in this town are worth the visit.
In Canada, I would visit the city of Victoria on Vancouver Island.
Other hot spots: Eugene, Oregon (once school starts in early September), Long Beach, CA (eastern edge near the area called Belmont Shore), Huntington Beach, CA, San Diego--particularly downtown or else near Mission Bay or near UCSD, and the city of Vancouver, Canada.
(and yes, Las Vegas probably tops all of these--but mainly in the Fall when it is not quite as hot; also Palm Springs, CA is good in the fall)
