I am planning a 10-20 days long trip accross USA by Bus or Train, around mid february (preferably bus as its cheaper). I am an Indian student livin around the DC area right now. I want to see as much USA as possible but by land travel, as I feel, thats the best way to see it. I dont own a car neither have a licence :( .

I would love to have a travel companion. If you too want to see and feel america as I do, join me. My plans are not yet made and I am completely open to any suggestion or itinerary or dates (from a week from today to first week of march). Email me at

Are you thinking about passenger train or freight train (train hopping) ?? Are you completely against going by car? Would you be willing to split gas prices perhaps? I'm not terribly far from you, about 7-8 hour drive in asheville north carolina. Ive been to DC a number of times and nearly everywhere in the u.s. I own a jeep, which doesn't get the greatest gas milage, but not too bad. Bus travel is fairly cheap though... but train hopping is free long as you dont get caught. Let me know a little more info... shooting you an email as well. feel free to email me

I don't know if you've figured out your plans for touring the US yet or not. I did it a bit via amtrack a couple years ago. It was a lot of fun, the only problem was that you'd end up in these big cities, and it could be an issue getting out to the country, to camp or what not. Because of that, it could end up being kinda costly at times. But then again, I was pretty young when I did it, and my travelling partner even younger, and we hadn't planned all that well. Just watch out for delays with amtrack if you go by passenger train (they were at times five hours plus).

Thanks Emily!

Sorry, Jim for the late reply. Thanks for the post. Train hopping sounds great. I've actully done something like that back in India. But since this is my first trip accross USA, I guess, I'd stick to the passenger trains. I have driven around half of India too.I dont as such mind splitting the gas prices but I would long distance car travel only after I get a licence. As having drivin permit gives more freedom to all the travelmates.

Anyways, My travel plans are still unmade, so if anyone wants to join, go for it!
