Hello,I am planning a Scottish castle trip, any suggestion of must see places?Eilean Donan is my first choice :-)
Isle of Skye and Scottish castles
Didn't get to the highlands on my trip but enjoyed Doune Castle, Culzean Castle, Stirling Castle, and Linlithgow Palace. Great history and tours/guides available at all.
Have a great trip!
Stirling and Dunvegan were the two highlights for me, though castles weren't really a focus, so we didn't do too many.
Glamis Castle was where the Queen Mother was brought up and they do a good tour.
Blair Castle also good.
I wouldn't bother with Dunottar or Dunstaffnage.
If you get to the Isle of Rhum, Kinloch Castle isn't very traditionally castley but is a crazy place to visit.
Not been to Inveraray Castle since I was a kid but it's one of the most popular.
Balmoral is iconic, though you only get in a few parts.
Up on the north coast the Castle of Mey is good.
Do not go to Scotland, trust me it's a -snip-
[ Edit: Let's keep the language decent please... ]
Best castles - Dunottar and Kilchurn castle.
Are you on the west coast? Kilchurn is near Oban but Donnator is near Aberdeen
Andys post is mostly late middle ages castles. I prefer the Medieval ones. Like Kilchurn.
Edinburgh is a waste of time and Stirling is not so great and over priced.
Doune castle is cool too. Where in Scotland are you going to be? I have been to most castles in the country So i can help.
