You can visit Delhi along with Agra and Varanasi.Covering these should not take you more than 3-4 days. You can head to Kerala for 4-5 days and Goa as well for 3-4 days. If you are the offbeat types, then you head to Meghalaya for about 5-6 days. :)

I would have to completely disagree with Dan.
Sure, you could probably hit those spots in that little of time, but what's the point? India is not about checking off some boxes and saying "yup, I was in Kerela...for 48 whole hours".
If you only have 10-14 days, pick one area and stick to it. In two weeks you can visit 4-5 towns and see them for 2-3 days. Don't underestimate how long it takes to get between towns sometimes. You can easily waste a whole day just getting to your next destination.

My last trip to India was two weeks with my wife. I'd been before, but she never had, so I wanted to take her to some of my favourite spots. I would recommend the route we took. In 16 days we saw: Delhi - Udaipur - Bundi - Rathanbore NP - Jaipur - Agra - Varanasi - Delhi.
Rathanbore, Jaipur, and Agra were only for a day each. I would skip Rathanbore, as it was a waste of time, but the rest are well worth going to and are perfect for a first trip. Other alternative destinations in the area if they interest you are Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Pushkar.

Another option is to head to Kerala. Two weeks is a great amount of time to see the highlights of Cochin, the backwaters, a hill station, and a few days on the beach in Varkala.

India is a beautiful country. I am not sure if 10-14 days will be enough to travel all the best places. However, you can start with Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Jaipur, Kashmir, Goa.
If you finish all these places then you will be lucky. Get your trip planned first with air tickets and all the hotel reservations.

I agree with Degolasse . 14 days is too short to see many places of India . You need to decide what is your interest. Beaches , Mountains , religious locations or historic places. The schedule suggested by Degolasse is a good one . January is an excellent month to be in India. Goa and South India ( Kerala ) can also give you a wider perspective of India. South India has temples, Ayurvedic massage ,coffee and spice gardens ( Munnar ) traditional Indian food , a few beaches in Kerala and generally has an easier pace of lifestyle compared to North India. Check Book your hotels and train tickets through net .

Wish you an enjoyable trip to India

Hi, I would agree with most that India cannot be experienced in few days. One need time to absorb the surrounding. . There are many places you can cover in any part of India in the season of January. It would be easier to suggest once we know your preferences and likes. What would you prefer to do while you are here. . . . Is it adventure sports, calm quiet time together, get transported to history, enjoy mountains or beaches, experience the country thru religious places, get exposed to spiritual way of life etc etc.. You an combine 2 or more choices. . . Places you should visit depends on that. India can offer all to suit all pockets. On a little personal choice. . I would suggest some parts of colorful Rajasthan - it's the perfect season to visit . . Udaipur, Jaipur , jodhpur high on the list, though Rajasthan offers some quiet heritage hotels too. You can combine this with khajuraho - where erotic sculptures made with love are worshipped. You can touch delhi while visiting any of these places. hills would offer snow and amazing view of himalayas but not to equipped on winter sports except few places like auliin uttarakhand. you can visit mcleodganj - Dalai Lama seat and on way back can visit bhakra nangal dam. If you are a beach person, then touch Kerala rather goa. Goa only if you are a party animal. There are much more places to discover here , and as I said it all depends what are you looking forward to in India. Every state has a different offering and we have touched only few. Every direction offers a different landscape, environment and culture to experience. Write in detail and I can come up with some places to fit in your visit. Cheers and happy traveling. And yes decide fast as winter is peak season in India and hotels airlines train get sold out very fast
