I am travelling around South East Asia for three months at the end of the year and need to buy a suitable backpack. Can anyone recommend a store in London (preferably Central, North or West) with a decent range of quality backpacks where the staff are knowledgeable and don’t mind taking the time and effort required to ensure the customer walks away with the backpack that is right for them?

I don't know where abouts but Nevisport and Blacks are both shops where the staff have all done backpacking so are useful to talk to. I am sure both shops have major stores in London. Check the websites and try the store locator.

There are a couple of stores on High Street Kensington (close to Argos).

There's a really good place at Knightsbridge opposite Harrods and up a bit (west). If you pass a good cake shop you are getting close.

Apart from that, there's a few just off the Strand near Covent Garden.

Are any of the Covent Garden ones still there?? I was gutted when the great YHA adventure shop there closed down, and one or two of the oterhs also went.
Btw, is there a yha shop in london these days? There's a sign outside a shop on Ken High Street, but the shop has long since been something else, and wondering if one does still exist?
