Here's a link to 270 different campgrounds in California that you can reserve. (Book early, because the good ones fill up right away).

If traveling up to San Francisco from Los Angeles and you plan to camp, I suggest a reservation at the following spots:

(1) Pismo State Beach---the point being that this allows you easy access to the Pismo/Oceana Dunes area right next door. These are giant sand dunes right on the oceanside (only major area like this left in the US). Years ago you could also find giant clams right on the beach, but now they have mostly all been dug up. Fortunately, they still make great clam chowder right near the pier just a couple miles north of the park.

(2) Pfeiffer Big Sur (near Carmel) or else Big Basin National Park (inland north of Santa Cruz and Felton). The first is noted for its scenery just outside of one of the well-known scenic areas (Pebble Beach) in all of America. The second spot is full of gigantic 300 feet tall redwoods, some with openings into their insides where you can literally put a card table and fit four people around it to have lunch.

I'd also suggest you consider a stop at Moonstone Beach in Cambria or else a winery tour alongside Hwy 46 between Paso Robles and Cambria (or both). Book tickets ahead and visit the Hearst Castle (just a short ways north of Cambria. The tour will take about 2-3 hours. When you get up to San Jose, consider visiting the Winchester Mystery House (there is a website that describes it).
