I'm going to be in new zealand and australia for 3-4months. I'm trying to save as much money as possible, and won't have much left when I get there. Has anyone ever hitchhiked before? I've heard that a lot of people do it, but is it safe for two women?

I definitely wouldn't recommend this to two women. Mind you, I wouldn't recommend it in most countries in the world but in Australia there have been some cases in the past with hitchiking women.... men too in fact I believe

i agree, not safe. two or more men dont get a ride, a man and a woman have very little problems, one man gets profiled. one or two women always get picked-up, even when they dont want to be.

i suggest you save a bit more money and catch a bus while in australia the bus system is not overly expensive and not only is hitch hiking very dangerous it is also illegal.

okay, so hitchhiking isn't a good idea. I know about the greyhound bus in australia, but whats the cheapest way to get around new zealand? We don't drive, and would be going from the south to auckland for about 2 months, working sometimes.

The Magic Bus is supposed to be a good way of doing it I've heard, won't know for sure till I go though.

Some hostels in australia will have notice boards. on these you might be able to find people offering a ride from one big city to the next. This way you can check out the people you are riding with before hand and you dont have to stand around all day waving your thumb. So a lot saver and less time consuming.

This way me and a friend got a ride from from Alice Springs to Melbourne wich took 3 days and was a lot better than the bus. It only cost 2 motel stays and money to tip in for gasoline. The people we got the ride from were realy nice and it was a amazing ride trough the outback and a nice oppertunity to get to know some locals.

I am a woman, I hitchiked alond around the north island for a whole month and camped on the beaches and in the fields. I had no problems and I was alone. You are 2 women, I would say that it will definitely be OK. go for it!

despite what ragnhild says, i really wouldnt recommend hitchiking in either two countries. i really don't think its very safe, particularly not for two women. as for new zealand buses the only one that springs to mind at the moment is the magic bus, but i'll let you know if i think of anymore.
