Hi guys me and a mate are looking to rent a camper and go from sydney to darwin at the beginning of feb. Ive done lots of rough calculations on prices etc but im just looking for some info from people that have done a similar journey. I was wondering e.g. if we decided to go sailing round whitsundays for say 3days what we can do with the camper is there places it can be left? And also how we can go about having a night out and still be able to just get into camper and sleep. Or would it be a case of only one person drinking then driving to a site??

Any info relating to this would be great.

We travelled down the east coast from cains to Melbourne in a hired campervan! I would recommend a book called 'camps' I had edition 5 in 2010. It's basically a road Map for all of Australia nicely organised and lists pretty much all the rest points and camp sites where u can stay. You will always find free camp sites with showers and toilets. Sometimes they will be a 15 min drive away from main beach areas! I would recommend trying to stick to camping in the designated areas we found some people just camping in random car parks and street corners and it doesn't give tourists the best of images! However there were places around Sydney where there were hardly and places to stay in a camper but if you find a quiet spot about 20 mins out of town arrive late and leave early you will be fine! As for whit Sundays I'm unsure if you can take your camper but I think you would have to find a place to park it for a few days! If you want to go out drinking the camp sites would be a taxi ride into the main towns I would have thought! We rented a camper for 2 months and it was quite expensive really, I would say anything longer than 2 months you should consider buying! But the time it takes to buy and sell, plus the worry of it breaking down need to be seriously considered. Hope this helps.
