English Harbour is a popular port town in the south of Antigua and has around 800 inhabitants. It's popular among yachties, but probably best known for Nelson's Dockyard, which occupies the site of the British Navy base. It displays restored buildings and other historical artifacts from the colonial period of the dockyard.

Sights and Activities

  • Nelson's Dockyard - Originally called "His Majesty's Antigua Naval Yard", Nelson's Dockyard is a National Park around a harbor called "English Harbor" - a really good protected harbor for boats. It was a boat repair facility for the Royal Navy. Actually, it was not named "Nelson's Dockyard" until after the British Navy abandoned it and turned it over to the Antigua government. Nelson WAS based here at English Harbour from 1784 to 1787. He was temporary Commander-in-Chief of the Leeward Islands for a short time. Fully restored to its original splendor, the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings of the Dockyard house modern amenities such as shops, hotels, and marina businesses Address: National Parks Authority, Box 1283, St. John's, Phone: 1 268 460-1379, Hours: Monday-Sunday 8:00am–6:00pm, Price: US $8 for visitors, US $3 or EC $8 for locals. Events and Festivals

Antigua Carnival

Go and celebrate one of the best Carnivals in the Caribbean at the island of Antigua. It is probably the biggest event that takes place on both islands and although it is not as impressive as a Rio Carnival, the people here sure know how to get dressed up, party, drink and have fun. And all without the problems of Rio.

It should be noted, Carnival on Antigua is a 10-day event which ends the first Tuesday in August. Unlike most carnival celebrations which usher in Lent, Antigua's carnival celebrates the people's emancipation from slavery which took place August 1, 1834. Participants in the festivities hail from almost every Caribbean island, including Jamaica, St. Vincent, Trinidad/Tobago, St. Kitts and Anguilla, among others. More information on Antigua Carnival.

Independence Day

Ever since Antigua and Barbuda became independent from Great Britain on November 1, 1981, the islands have marked the day with noisy celebrations filled with chiming church bells and blaring sirens. All government buildings and schools are decorated bright yellow and red during the two weeks prior and the streets are filled with parades, music, food fairs, and galas for at least a week before.

Getting Around

By Car

There are numerous car rental agencies, both international and local, on the island of Antigua. Most of them can be found at the airport and some in smaller resort areas or in St. John's. Driving is on the left side of the road and you need to buy a temporary driving permit, valid for 90 days which you can buy for 20 USD at the rental agencies or nearest police station.

By Public Transport

The bus system is not really extensive and most services are erratic. Still, buses from St John's to Falmouth and English Harbour are plentiful, cheap, and take about 30 minutes.
