Jewish Museum Oswiecim
Travel Guide Europe Poland Oswiecim Jewish Museum Oswiecim
Introduction
In the center of the town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz), the Jewish Museum presents Oshpitzin, a permanent exhibition about the town's thriving pre-war Jewish community. Through artifacts, documents, photographs, and state-of-the-art multimedia, the exhibition captures the history and spirit of this vanished community.
The Jewish Museum is part of the Auschwitz Jewish Center, which also includes the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot and Cafe Bergson. The Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot, next door to the Jewish Museum, is the only surviving synagogue in Oswiecim. Once one of between 20 and 30 Jewish houses of prayer in town, this synagogue was converted into a Nazi warehouse during WWII. It is a moving remnant of a community destroyed in the Holocaust.

Behind the center is the Kluger House, the home of the last Jewish resident of Oswiecim, Szymon Kluger (1925-2000). Saved from destruction and renovated, the Kluger House now contains Cafe Bergson and temporary exhibition space.
