Introduction

Kanye is a town in the Southeast region of Botswana, near the border with South Africa.

Sights and Activities

You climb the Kgwakgwe Hill situated at the western part of the town. It is 110m high and easier to climp from north eastern or south eastern side.

You can also visit Makgodumo site which is abundant in bird species and wild animals such as leopards, baboons, monkeys and snakes. The place also house the Makgodumo Dam. Its is situated at the north eastern part of the town. It is a good place to decompress and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.

Another attractive site is the Pharing Gorge which resembles a water fall. The water is abundant in the area throughout the year. It is situated at Makgodumo site.

Bathoen II museum is another best place to visit. It houses the history of the Ngwaketse the chief group in Southern District. It also contains artifacts made according to the Setswana culture. It is situated at the Main Mall.

You can also enjoy the natural beauty of The Gorge which is a natural environment with very eye catching landscape and green grass within a woodland savanna vegetation. It is situated on the eastern part of the town.

Another place to visit is the National Food Technology Research Centre (NFTC) which is research site for biotechnology, biochemistry and food science. It is the ONLY one of its kind in Botswana. It is situated on the south of the town on the western side of the road to Lobatse.

Kanye Main Kgotla (Traditional gathering place and customary court) is a place that one can learn all the history of Ngwaketse land. You can also have time to chat with the royal family. It is situated at Ntsweng plateau on the northern side of the town. You can also enjoy the natural beauty of the town from the hill top. The view from there is breath taking.

Getting There

Situated 90km from the best diamond producing mine by value located in Jwaneng. Jwaneng falls under the Southern District which its administrative offices are located in Kanye. You can get to Kanye through a bus from Gaborone. Its 100km away and takes 50 minutes. All roads leading to Kanye are tarred. You can take a bus from Johannesburg or Mafikeng due to its proximity to the border between Botswana and South Africa.

Getting Around

You can around using cabs which cost P3.90 to any place you want to go to within the town. You can also use van/ mini bus taxis which cost P3.30 per trip.

You can enjoy traditional beer at Kgotla Beer Garden which is rich in vitamin A. You can also enjoy traditionally made sweet drinks, coffee, tea and soft drinks at any restaurant

Post

BotswanaPost is the national postal service of Botswana. It is operating more than 100 post offices and 70 agencies throughout the country and is fairly reliable, albeit not overly fast. All post has to go overland through Gaborone first and international mail by plane might go via Johannesburg, so count on several weeks for your postcard or letter to be delivered to places in Europe or North America. You can use them for parcels as well, though faster and more expensive services are available by companies like TNT, UPS or DHL.
