Lubango
Travel Guide Africa Angola Lubango
Introduction
In 1882 people from Madeira settled in Lubango and it became in 1885 a town, until 1975 called Sa de Bandeira. It is at 1750 metres altitude and has a very pleasant climate.
Sights and Activities
- The Igreja Se Catedral has a interesting Art Deco architecture, some other buildings in the center as well.
- Tunda-Vala, a 2,600-metre tall volcanic fissure near Lubango, affording a spectacular view. Easy to get there with your own car (a well signposted turnoff on the Avenida Senhora do Monte, past the Shoprite supermarket and before the Nossa Senhora do Monte complex, you can do this in about 3 hours), but no public transport is going there.
Getting There
By Plane
Daily by TAAG Angola Airlines from Luanda, 3 times per week from Windhoek.
By Train
In the very early morning is a train to Namibe.
By Car
The road to Namibe is good and quite spectacular, to Santa Clara (Namibia border) it is also good, some burned out tanks and other war material on the way, to Benguela about 100 to 130 kilometers before Benguela are quite some potholes.
By Bus
Macon is appearently the biggest and best organised bus company and goes now to most towns in Angola. You can book online, unfortunately only in Portuguese. Ango-Real is another big bus company. Macon and Ango-Real have their own bus terminals, Macon has 2 stations a bit out of town, the Nambambi station for most directions the Chioco station only for Santa Clara. For to go to Namibe Macon hase uncomfortable arrival/departure times, the smaller, cheaper, more frequent but less comfortable buses from the "Parque dos mini Autocarros" at Praca Joao de Alameida might be the better option.
Getting Around
By Car
.
By Public Transport
The blue and white minibus "taxies" go for 150 Kwanza allmost everywhere.
By Foot
The town center is small and walkable.
Sleep
In the Nossa Senhora do Monte area in the West of the town are some nice hotels like the Kimbo do Soba or Serra de Chela. In the centre the Grand Hotel looks nice but is under renovation, the Chik Chik hotel, Avenida 4 Fevereiro, is good. The hotel Amigo, Avenida Deolinda Rodrigues is a reasonable option. Only some of the expensive hotels are online bookable.
