Nuorgam

Introduction

In Nuorgam situates the northernmost point of Finland and EU. This village of 130 people is said to be the happiest village of Finland. Livelihood to these happy people consist mostly of travelling industry and border trade with Norway. Norwegians come here to get cheaper food and alcohol.

This town is separated from Norway by Teno river which is popular place for fishing.

For a long time Sami people lived here. Sami are indigenous people of Finland who live in north of Finland, Norway and Sweden and in Kola peninsula.
First people immigrate to the northern Scandinavia between 10 000-6 500 BC from areas which became Norway, Sweden and Russia. These groups formed the basis of our population and culture.

The firsts Scandinavians believed in nature spirits and sacrificed always part of their catch in these places of seita. Seita could be specific rock or natural formation which were hallowed to certain spirits. Like spirits of weather, fish or reindeer. If you know where to look, you could find these Seitas all over Lapland.

In addition to fishing popular activities in the area are hiking, biking and canoing in the summer, and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter.

Kaldoaivi Wilderness provides perfect place to explore Lapland's nature at its best.
Kaldoaivi is Finland’s largest wilderness which 2,924 km2 includes deep river valleys and gentle mountains.
Through Kaldoaivi goes many hiking routes which varies from ones which you can walk in a day to ones that take days.
Shortest of them is 5,8 kilometers and takes an loop near Skaidjärvi (lake Skaid). Longest of them is near 100 kilometres long and you sleep in the desert huts or in your own tent on the way.

These desert huts are common in Finland and are found also on shorter routes, for example in lake Skaid, and there is fireplace to roast some sausages or marshmallows on the fire. And of course to warm the hut when its cold.

This is also one of the best possible place to see the northern lights. Most likely time of the year to see this amazing phenomenon is September-October and March but there is chance to see in the winter between (October-March).

From Nuorgam you can do trips to Arctic Ocean either do fishing or sightseeing.

Getting There

From Helsinki the bus drive takes over an day and you will have to change busses several times but it is possible to reach Nuorgam using public transportation if you have the time.

There is daily bus from Rovaniemi.

If you want to enjoy the drive to Nuorgam you will see on the way when the more populated areas of Finland is left behind little by little and the Lapland begins. Just remember to watch out for the reindeers, they are roaming free all around Lapland and often wanders to the roads.
