Introduction

Phuntsholing town is the second populated region in Bhutan. Sharing a border with the Indian state West Bengal, the town is considered an economic hub with traders swarming the region. Phuntsholing town is the gateway for all traders from neighboring states. Bhutanese farmers come to Phuntsholing to sell their farm produces like potato, cardamom and many more other mass productions. The town is under Chukha District. It takes 5 hours to reach the town from the capital, Thimphu.

Sights and Activities

  • Zangto Pelri Lhakhang - The Zangdo Pelri Lhakhang is located right in the heart of the town which is enclosed by a recreational park. The Zangdo pelri Lhakhang serves as a place of worship and faith for the locals residing there. Elderly people are always seen circumambulating the Lhakhang and children play in the park. The Zangdo Pelri Lhakhang is constructed as a representation of Guru Padmasambhava’s paradise.
  • Kharbandi Lhakhang - The Kharbandi Lhakhang or also known as the Rinchending monastery sits atop a hill overlooking the whole Phuntsholing town and beyond. The monastery has become a major tourist attraction and a perfect place to take photos with the back drop of the town.
  • Crocodile zoo - The crocodile zoo is another attraction in Phuntsholing which sees many tourists every day. The zoo started with only 4 Gharials with an objective of breeding and saving the endangered species. The best time to see these animals are during their feeding time.

Events and Festivals

  • Chukha Tshechu - Chukha Tshechu is celebrated for 3 days in chukha Dzong. Tshechus are a masked dance festival where monks perform meticulously choreographed series of religious dances. The monks wear elongated elegantly crafted brocade and silk dresses and wooden crafted asks. The dances are representation of real life events with moral values or just religious dances meant to evoke faith and devotion into the onlookers also blessing them.

Weather

Phuntsholing has a sub-tropical climatic condition with hot and humid summers following fairly warm winters. The temperature in Phuntsholing ranges from 9 °C in winter to 30 °C in summer.

By Bus

Phuntsholing has multiple buses plying to and from Thimphu on a daily basis costing only a little less than $5.

You can tour around the town in a taxi with a fixed rate which is usually less than 100Nu. You can hire a taxi from anywhere in the town.

By Public Transport

The town also has public transport which goes from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’.

  • Zen Restaurant - This restaurant is located opposite to the Zangdo Pelri Lhakhang in the heart of the town. It is the most exclusive and exotic family restaurant in Phuntsholing town with a wide variety of choices on menu to choose from. The ambience is really warm and comfortable and the food is also really good.
  • Kizom Café- The café really stands out from the rest owing to their interior settings and the ambience which is really nice. The café is located in the middle of the town opposite to the Zangdo Pelri Lhakhang and next to the Zen restaurant. They serve really good coffee and some awesome pastries to go with the coffee.

You can get drinks in every restaurants and bar except on Tuesdays which is recognized as a dry day and it is illegal to sell, buy and drink on Tuesdays. Locally brewed alcohols like beers, wines and whisky are available.

WiFi is readily available in the majority of hotels throughout the country. Many of the internet cafes offer WiFi also. Most population centres have internet cafes, although they are relatively expensive, and the connection is slow. Please make sure your travel agent find an appropriate internet cafe in advance if you need a connection for work.

Telephone call booths are existent in major towns in Bhutan. Most of Bhutan has mobile phone coverage, which is smart phone capable. B-Mobile has agreements with North American, some Asian and European countries on mobile roaming. Tashi Cell is another mobile company based in country.

Tourists can now quickly and easily register for a B-Mobile SIM that is valid for 1 month. Simply take your passport to a B-Mobile office. The SIM card costs 50Nu, and comes with 50Nu credit. Ask them to activate 3G/4G and data access while you are there, and test it works before leaving. There are no data plans per say, but the rate is affordable by international standards (0.0003Nu/KB). SIM Cards are available in all sizes (Standard, Micro and Nano). Recharge cards are available at most stores and small shops.

B-Mobile and TashiCell have different frequencies for their data network. Check your phone's supported frequency before getting a SIM card.

B-Mobile: 850Mhz (3G) and 1800Mhz (LTE band 3)
TashiCell: 850Mhz (3G) and 700Mhz (LTE band 28)

Bhutan Post offers services throughout the country. It's reliable but it takes quite some time for your postcard or letter to arrive in other countries.
