The Visayas are one of the three major island groups that make up the Philippines. The others are Luzon and Mindanao.
The Visayas includes the major islands of Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte and Samar. Cebu is the center of commerce and trade in the region while the island paradise of Boracay has become the most famous tourist destination in the region for its beautiful beach.




  • Bacolod is known as the City of Smiles and is host to one of the countries most famous festivals, the Masskara Festival.
  • Cebu is known as the Queen City of the South and is the oldest city in the country. It also serves as the center of commerce and trade in the Visayas group of islands.
  • Iloilo is located on the island of Panay and is one of the growth centers in the Visayas. It is famous for the Dinagyang Festival.
  • Kalibo is another city located on the island of Panay which has now become an alternative entry point for foreign visitors to the island of Boracay.

Events and Festivals

Main article: Events and Festivals in the Philippines

  • Ati-Atihan Festival - Held every January 13 -19 in Kalibo, Aklan. Festival commemorating the infant Sto. Niño where revellers are costumed into the blackened Ati tribe.
  • Sinulog Festival - Held every third Sunday of January in Cebu City. Distinguished by signature shuffling dance performed along the streets of the city as they celebrate in honor of the image of the Holy Child, the Sto. Niño.
  • Dinagyang Festival - Held every fourth weekend of January in Iloilo City. A major festival also honoring the Sto. Niño where revellers also gather on the streets dressed in Ati warrior outfits.




Warm and humid weather throughout the year, with maximum temperatures mostly around or above 30 °C and nights mostly above 20 °C.



Getting There

There are several airports to fly into. Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in Cebu is the third most important airport in the country following. Since most international flights connect through Manila, one would need to transfer to Manila Domestic Airport and may get flights from Manila to Cebu with Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific Air. In recent years, additional international airports have opened to serve other islands in the Visayas to give tourists a direct route nearer to their targeted destinations.
