After finishing studying computer science at a university in the Netherlands, I spent two and a half years travelling the world in a quest for freedom, justice, truth, love, the answers to life, the universe and everything, and some idea of what I wanted to do with my life in a way that'd let me avoid being trapped in a boring 9-5 job.

I don't quite have all the answers to those questions yet, but for the moment I'm back home running a successful web development company, developing interesting web applications (and having travellerspoint as one of my favorite clients), keeping weird hours and still managing to see quite a bit of the world in between projects.

  • Hobbies:

    Photography, reading, hiking, live music, website development, web standards, catching sunsets and sunrises from remote places (preferably mountaintops).

  • Favourite places:

    Lake Tekapo in New Zealand. You can experience infinity there, and no matter what color the lake decides to take on any particular day, it's _always_ stunning.

    El Chaltén in Argentina. Hiker's paradise!

Australia

I spent a year living in and travelling through (part of) Australia, and returned a couple of years later to hit spots I still managed to miss. I never made it further north on the west coast than the Pinnacles Desert, nor to Darwin (shame on me!), and avoided a lot of the more touristy spots on the East Coast, but other than that I explored most of Adelaide to Cairns, with emphasis on the Melbourne and Sydney area.

Netherlands

I've lived in the Netherlands for most of my life. Which means I hardly knew anything about the country. And then I got to play tourguide for a friend who came over from the USA for two weeks, and suddenly I had a much better idea of what's worthwhile to do and where's good to visit. :)

USA

I've travelled extensively through California, and am reasonably familiar with Chicago. All this was quite a while ago, so probably better not to ask me too detailed questions about practical matters. I should be able to help out some with pointers of what's worthwhile and what isn't, though.

New Zealand

I spent ten months travelling all over New Zealand on a working holiday visa, and have gone back thrice since, including two whirlwind tours of the best the country has to offer, playing tourguide for friends. I've travelled by bus, campervan and car. There's few places in the country I haven't been to, and many of the main highlights I've visited during at least two different seasons. If you're into beautiful nature and love hiking, ask me for suggested itineraries (or search the New Zealand forum for posts by me containing those). :)

Norway

I travelled through Norway for three weeks, seeing a decent part of the country (Hardangervidda / Jostedalsbreen / Svartisen-Saltfjellet, the Lofoten and Oslo / Bergen / Ålesund / Trondheim), although none of it was very in depth. Still, I should be able to help out some with pointers of what's worthwhile and what isn't.

Peru

I explored a decent part of Peru during a month-long visit. Did the classic gringo trail (Lima, Arequipa (+ Colca Canyon), Puno, Cuzco (+ Inca Trail to Machu Picchu), and then went up north to Caraz to do some hiking in the Cordillera Blanca.
