The Golden Room at Teatro Colon; the popular guided tour ($15 and in Englsih) of the opera house was surprisingly interesting; a 3 1/2 year, $100 USD million renovation with 1500+ workers was completed in 2010 by VagabondCowboy

The Grand Foyer of the Belle Epoque Teatro Colon featured a gorgeous skylight; the opera house is considered one of the best in the world, together with La Scala in Milán, the Opera Garnier in Paris and the Royal Opera House in London by VagabondCowboy

I'm looking very chummy with Gary but I think I had my arm around him so he could hold me up!; walking in crampons definitely took some getting used to but we managed just fine and had a great day exploring the glacier by VagabondCowboy

There are age limits to walk on the glacier with the 7 1/2 trek requiring you to be no more than 50 years old; we did the mini ice walking only slightly more than an hour on the glacier which was plenty for us by VagabondCowboy

The Neoclassical Palace of the Argentine Nation (their equivalent of the US Capitol) opened in 1906; the building is crowned by a bronze-plated dome 260 feet in height, weighing 3,000 tons, weathered to a green color by VagabondCowboy

Casa Rosada(1886) houses the office of the Argentinian president (he lives in a suburban palace); Casa Rosada sits on Plaza de Mayo (along with City Hall, the national bank and the cathedral) which has been the heart of the city since its founding in 1580 by VagabondCowboy

The colorful buildings in La Boca have transformed the area into a touristy mecca for local artists; I bought a painting (by an artist with no hands who painted with the brush in his mouth) here on my first visit and Mike and Gary bought one this trip by VagabondCowboy

When the glacier calved it would create icebergs with some having cool shapes like these two that I thought resembled the Loch Ness monster; Argentino Lake is the largest in the country and covers 566 square miles by VagabondCowboy

Most icebergs are white, but they occur in a range of colors depending on the amount of air in the ice and whether it contains any impurities; color changes due to exposure to air and sunlight which can erode the iceberg surface, making it appear whiter by VagabondCowboy

Groups doing the Big Ice trek walked 7+ hours on the glacier and spent $500 while we did the Mini Ice which was only $250; those prices are official rates which is very confusing since the actual prices we paid were about half that by VagabondCowboy

Perito Moreno glacier is 19miles long with the terminus being 3.1 miles wide with an average height of 240ft above Argentino Lake with an ice depth of 558 ft;Perito Moreno is one of the very few glaciers that's in a state of equilibrium and not retreating by VagabondCowboy

This is not a sign I'd seen before which led us to wonder if people have been caught pooping in the bushes in the national park; maybe someone at the park office just wanted to be a comedian but everyone noticed the sign and our group obeyed it by VagabondCowboy

The visitor center at Perito Moreno was very well done with lots of walkways and viewpoints where you could get an up close look at the glacier; we also took a boat ride on the lake where we watched the glacier calve which was spectacular by VagabondCowboy

El Chalten, Argentina's trekking capital with 350 year-round residents,is 137 miles from El Calafate (nearest major airport);in 1985, Argentina and Chile had a border dispute to claim rights over El Chaltén; El Chaltén was ultimately awarded to Argentina by VagabondCowboy

The jagged peaks of the Southern Andes reminded me of the Tetons; some peaks, such as Mount Fitz Roy, are inaccessible from the Chilean side and have only been successfully climbed from the Argentinian side by VagabondCowboy
