Tangier,Morocco, Dean's bar, 2 Rue D'Amerique du Sud..... by Bennytheball
The famous Dean's bar, a focal meeting point of the foreign expat community during the many Interzone decades. The bar has been closed for several years after the death of the current owner and (anecdotally) is up for sale. Next door to Dean's is an old barber shop the interior of which gives an atmospheric sense of a bygone era, decorated with tall potted plants, scruffy seating and decoration, and a curtain obscuring whatever needs to be obscured at the rear of the shop...... Gents' haircuts 30 dirhams, negotiable!

Tangier Lisba bar interior by Bennytheball
Early in the evening the bar is sparsely-populated, providing a good opportunity to establish occupancy of desirable seating positions commanding a view of ongoing activities when the action becomes more boisterous at a later hour, otherwise known as people-watching, which can often be entertaining to the casual voyeur as hard-drinking clientele of both genders descent into alcoholic oblivion, a consequence of drinks being the cheapest in town!

Tangier, Lisba bar illuminations.... by Bennytheball
The regular lighting in the bar is always dimmed to make the practice of drinking alcohol by Muslims (which is technically banned) more acceptable, but can be rather gloomy, so an attempt to brighten up the ambience without disturbing the status quo is made by the addition of soft blue lighting.

Tangier Dean's grave died 1963 missed by all and sundry..... by Bennytheball
In a shady graveyard surrounding St Andrews Anglican church, a simple cracked gravestone is the only reminder of Donald Kimfull, alias "Dean" an ex London cocaine dealer who got into a bit of trouble when one of his clients died of an overdose and had to quickly disappear eventually arriving in wartime Tangier where he worked as a barman in the Hotel el Minzah, eventually buying and running his own bar in Rue d'Amerique du sud. Dean died in February 1963 of a heart attack, friends and associates buried him in the nearby church grounds, the inscription on his tombstone reads " Dean, died February 1963 missed by all and sundry".
