The George Inn - Sandy Lane by Beausoleil
We had driven to Sandy Lane to take pictures of thatched houses for later paintings. We arrived before The George Inn opened so we cheerfully parked in their parking lot and walked through the tiny and very picturesque village taking photos. It is a magical little village.

Lacock Abbey by Beausoleil
We passed Lacock Abbey on our way to Sandy Lane and I snapped this photo out the car window. Tomorrow is our last day in Lacock so we'll spend the day in Lacock and have a thorough visit of Lacock Abbey then. My "Harry Potter" loveing granddaughters would never forgive me if we didn't get photos . . .

St. Michael and All Angels Church by Beausoleil
St. Michael and All Angels was built in 1839 within the village of Broadway itself. It has a lovely carved wood pulpit transferred from St Eadburgha, the former church which lies outside of town.

Reminds me of France but it is Broadway in Worcestershire County, UK by Beausoleil
We were surprised to find a town named Broadway in England. It just seems so New York City, but there it was tucked into the Cotswolds and utterly charming . . . as are all Cotswold villages. We spent a lovely afternoon puttering about there and had lots of company. Tourists have definitely discovered it; we did.

St. Patrick driving out the serpents by Beausoleil
Found this sign in Broadway in the UK and since St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, I'm not sure why he was working in Broadway but it was a fascinating sign.

Hawthorne blooming in the hills outside of town by Beausoleil
We were walking back to our car when we spotted the hills outside town dotted with blooming hawthorne trees. The countryside was covered with them and our landlady said they hadn't had such a good bloom in many years.

Eight Bells Inn by Beausoleil
We read someplace that Eight Bells Inn was a good place to eat and when we checked their menu, it looked great. We were parked in a 2-hour spot so had to go retrieve our car and park elsewhere, but as soon as we did that, we headed for Eight Bells and had a delightful lunch. Very friendly and very good food. If you are visiting St. James Church or the Court Barn Museum, it is a very convenient place to eat.

A fairly small garden that manages to hold 1200 plants, many of Chinese and Japanese origin, that were collected by Ernest Wilson. The garden is free but there is a donation box inside.

Eight Bells Inn (count them) by Beausoleil
The Eight Bells Inn was originally built in the 14th century to house the stonemasons who built St. James' church. It was later used to store the peel of eight bells that were hung in the church tower hence its name. It is a very warm and friendly inn with excellent food and within easy walk of nearly all sights in Chipping Campden.

Wool Market in Chipping Campden by Beausoleil
The Market Hall was built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks. At one point it was almost sold to an American but the local people raised the money to purchase it and donated it to the National Trust. It is open and free to the public . . . and beautiful.

Almshouses near St. James Church by Beausoleil
The Almshouses were built in 1612 to provide accommodation for six poor men and six poor women who were allowed the accommodation, a weekly allowance, a frieze gown, a ton of coals and a felt hat annually. The Almshouses still provide homes for twelve elderly people with the exception of the addition of a modern bathroom and kitchen.
