Collioure, France - Chapelle Saint-Vincent by Beausoleil
Collioure was a favorite with many of the French painters. There are frames set up all over the area where you can look through and see a famous painting in the original scene. The tower beside Église Notre-Dame des Anges which was a lighthouse, not a bell tower, has been immortalized by most French artists. There is a small Chapel of Saint Vincent nearby and you can walk there and to the small working lighthouse with great views of Collioure. There is parking above and below the Château and you can easily walk to all the sights from either. We parked at the top so had great views of both sides. There is the very touristed and busy side of the Château and the more peaceful beach side where you will also find the art museum. Both sides are interesting if completely different ways. Both sides have nice beaches but the touristed side is a much smaller beach with many more restaurants and activities.

Minerve - Cross and Cathar Monument outside Église Saint-Etienne by Beausoleil
The region around Minerve has been occupied since prehistory, and some of the artefacts from the area can be seen in the small Museum of Archaeology and Prehistory definitely worth a visit. In 1210 a group of Cathars escaped from Béziers that was under attack in the Albigensian crusade and found refuge in the heavily fortified village of Minerve. It took the brutal Simon de Montfort six weeks of siege, but eventually the village gave in after a catapult bombardment destroyed the only well in the village. Following the surrender of the town 140 cathars were burned at the stake. There is a reconstruction of the catapult, called a malvoisine, across the river from the south posterne or gate. The church, Église Saint-Etienne has the year 456 engraved on the altar. The church is 11th Century but the altar comes from Saint-Nazaire church that formerly was in the cemetery and was a staging area for one of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes. Saint-Nazaire is gone but the altar was saved and placed in Église Saint-Etienne. Standing outside the church and beside the Mairie (town hall) is The Dove , a sculpture by J.-L. Séverac (1982), a commemorative stele to the 140 Cathar Perfects who were burnt at the stake in 1210. It is assumed that the devastation took place at the confluence of the Cesse and Briant rivers at the foot of the town.

Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, hiking up to the Château by Beausoleil
We had just finished reading "A Castle in My Backyard" and knew there was a path from the village up to the Château with spectacular views so we parked in the village and started up the hill. On the way we met this cute little dog quietly guarding his back yard.

The cemetery with a spectacular view mentioned in "A Castle in My Backyard" by Beausoleil
We had just finished reading "A Castle in My Backyard" and knew there was a path from the village up to the Château with spectacular views so we parked in the village and started up the hill. It's a beautiful walk and paved nearly the entire way. A view from the cemetery was mentioned so I had to take a picture. It was amazing.

Ralph's Cross, North York Moors by SEINGRU
More correctly known as ‘Young’ Ralph’s Cross, this symbol of the North York Moors National Park – the least well known of the national parks in England – is surrounded by legend. Ralph is supposed to have been a guide to travellers or nuns. He either found someone dead here or died here himself. There is a place on top of the cross to leave money… but be careful about taking it: if you don’t need it local legend says you will die in the fog!
