A long-established bar and restaurant opposite the port entrance and TANGER building at the pedestrian precinct on Avenue Mohammed V1, restaurant on street level, and tapas bar upstairs with several large widescreen TV's for football addicts.

The Hole in the Wall Bar, Ave Prince Heritier, Tangier....... by Bennytheball
In a traffic congested street in Tangier's city centre, after threading my way through parked cars, hawkers and miscellaneous pavement clutter I finally found my objective described in my Lonely Planet guide book as "the smallest bar in the world"..... Arriving in early evening I pushed open the black swing door which recoiled and collided with an inebriate patron, but no offence was taken when I muttered "smaalee".....sorry! the bar was almost filled to capacity at a count of around twenty all male drinkers intently watching football on the wall-mounted TV screen, the atmosphere was calm and friendly with a few animated conversations in progress among drinkers disinterested in the football, bar service was prompt and efficient from the experienced barman, only Flag and Stork bottle beers are served at 17 dirhams a pop, a few tapas remnants littered the bar top otherwise the main activity centred on swilling back as many cheap beers as possible before moving on to more expensive upmarket establishments. Despite the congestion of bodies I discreetly managed to take a picture of the interior of the bar without provoking any animosity, one of the few survivors from Tangier's notorious Interzone decades.

This was the high point in the old city that we reached after walking from the harbor. Most of this part of the city is made of small, twisting streets, but here we had a view.

Morocco gate old city by randjb
We took the ferry from the tip of Spain, Tarifa, and landed in Tangier. With no plan, we walked past the initial groups of "tour guides" and taxi drivers. As we exited the port, a man about my age offered us some simple advice as well as information. He did not ask to guide us nor ask for money. We knew however, from the badge he wore, that he was a guide. His approach won us over and we spent the rest of the day with him.

Majid showing us around by randjb
Majid showed us the old city including a synagogue built in 1400 which we all enjoyed but particularly Karen. His English was excellent and he possessed a wealth of stories about Tangier. Interestingly enough, he attended college in Idaho back in the early 70's! His service extended all the way back to the ferry where he got us through customs quickly and safely out to the ship. We could not have been more pleased that we engaged him.

Hand woven rug by randjb
Though ours will be bigger, this is the pattern for the rug Debbie and I bought for the dining room in the new condo. Starting from the bottom, this will probably become the theme for all the decorating in the public spaces as we repaint, choose the pictures, and eventually replace the furniture to match our new style of living. BTW, rug is due in October.

The synagogue by randjb
This synagogue was built before Columbus sailed for America. Intricate in every detail, it is small and set deep within the twisting streets. A jewel we would never have found without Majid.

There are now dedicated Grand taxi lanes for Chefchaouen, Asilah and Larache, with overhead shelter at the rank beside the city bus station at Pl Al Jamia al Arabia.
