Statues on the Durham Cathedral - interesting by Beausoleil
There is a very interesting story about how Saint Cuthbert’s final resting place was chosen. In 995 the monks were searching for a suitable site when they followed two milkmaids looking for a brown cow to a rocky peninsula in the River Dee. This was Dun Holme and the cathedral was built here to house Cuthbert’s shrine. The legend was portrayed in a stone carving described in 1593 as "a monument of a milk maid milking her cow … on the outside of the north-west turret of the cathedral." The one you see today is its replacement dating from 1775.

Durham Cathedral with the central tower under wraps by Beausoleil
We were so disappointed to discover first that the central tower was swathed in tarps for construction and next that photos were not allowed inside the Cathedral. I've never been in a church that forbade photos and my little rebellion was to refuse to purchase their book. We attend the Cathedral in our city and people take pictures all the time. It doesn't seem to bother anyone; we're proud of our beautiful Cathedral and welcome all visitors.

Cloisters of Exeter Cathedral (with picnic tables) by Beausoleil
We've never seen picnic tables in a cloister before so this was fascinating. It was definitely not like any cloister we've seen before but was somewhat peaceful.

A fun place for lunch or tea on the green beside Exeter Cathedral. There was a lot of construction on that corner the day we were there, but food and service were great. We had the Sunday roast and loved it.
