Interior of St. James Church in Chipping Campden by Beausoleil
There was a Norman church on this site before AD 1180. About AD 1490 the nave was reconstructed on the foundations of the old Norman nave. The great window over the chancel arch was added, and around AD 1500 the 120 foot West tower was built. There is a peal of eight bells, whose dates vary from AD 1618 to AD 1737 that were recast and rehung in 1987. There is a nearby inn named Eight Bells in reference to the tower bells. It's a great place for lunch if you're visiting the church.

Driving into Chipping Campden by Beausoleil
Chipping Campden is what is cheerfully known as a "chocolate box" town in the Cotswolds, i.e. it is pretty enough to decorate a souvenir box of chocolates. There are many thatched houses and the High Street is enchanting.

The Market Hall in Chipping Campden by Beausoleil
The Market Hall was built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks. At one point it was almost sold to an American but the local people raised the money to purchase it and donated it to the National Trust. It is open and free to the public . . . and beautiful.

St. Edward's Parish Church by Beausoleil
St Edward's parish church, beside the Stow Lodge Hotel-Restaurant, is celebrating the 900th anniversary of the town's first stone-built church. There is not a lot in the church that has survived the 900 years. St Edward's has a relatively modest tower that is eighty-eight feet in height. It was completed in 1447 and contains eight bells. Inside the church is a large painting of The Crucifixion on the south wall that was painted in 1610 by the Gaspard de Craeyer (1582-1669) of Antwerp, and presented to the church in 1838 by a member of the Chamberlayne family.

Ice Cream Man on Market Square by Beausoleil
Nearly every photo I've seen shows this same ice cream man so I couldn't resist taking his picture when he magically appeared for our visit. We didn't indulge since we had just eaten lunch. Next time . . .

The Market Cross on Market Square by Beausoleil
The Market Cross was supposed to remind the merchants at the market to be honest in their dealings. Honest folks don't need reminders and the others won't care anyway but it's very pretty.

Stow Lodge Restaurant by Beausoleil
Our search for lunch ended when we found the Stow Lodge Restaurant just off the Market Square. It had a pleasing menu and looked positively elegant. The hotel has been in the same family for fifty years and has been lovingly cared for. There is ample room to eat outside although we decided to eat inside. The service and food were wonderful.

St. Edward's Hall on the Market Square by Beausoleil
St. Edward's Hall is the Town Hall in Stow-on-the-Wold. It was built in 1878 to provide a town meeting place. The Belfry Spire was added in 1894 to house the fire bell, as the Rector of that time would not allow the church bell to be used. Today, the downstairs is occupied by the public library, a visitor information center and a collection related to the Civil War.

The Bell Inn at Stow by Beausoleil
A hotel, pub, restaurant. We read about it and walked down for lunch, but after looking at their menu, decided perhaps we would find something else. It's very picturesque and I'm sure lovely but didn't really have anything that appealed to our appetites. It really was very pretty though.
