Typically you'd like to see the wall of mirrors and the French doors that overlook the terrace. Unfortunately, below the chandeliers are at least 100 people blocking almost every part of the view. So we looked up, and turns out they did a pretty good job on the ceiling as well.

Latona Fountain by randjb

The most centrally located and probably the largest fountains on the grounds of Versailles, the wedding cake design is beautiful even without the water feature being turned on. Unfortunately, they fountains have old pipes and they are only turned on during the weekends.

Since Louis wasn't allowed to leave France, ransoms of captured kings being what they were in those days, he thought he'd bring a little of Venice to him... by having his gardeners dig a small version of the Grand Canal. Despite how overwhelming large the grounds of Versailles are today, they are only a small fraction of what they once were. When Louis said "mine," he pretty much meant everything he could see.

Omaha Beach feels like one of the most tranquil and peaceful places in France. The memorial in the upper right is a reminder, but nature would tell a different story.

Point du Hoc by randjb

The view the Germans had when six thousand ships showed up on the horizon on the morning of D-Day. Point du Hoc lies between Omaha and Utah beaches and was taken by a relatively small number of rangers. As much as landing on the beaches must have been terrifying, being in the bunkers could not have been much less frightening.

Arc de Triomphe as seen from the Eiffel Tower by randjb

One of the most alluring aspects of Paris is that the city has maintained height restrictions on its buildings. Consequently, though surrounded by one of the most busy and crowded parts of the city, the Arc de Triomphe stands proudly above its neighbors, a monument that has not been drowned in a sea of skyscrapers. From the Eiffel Tower, the city and suburbs expand in all directions, the views extending for miles. The joy is finding a particularly beautiful needle in this enormous haystack.

Ladies on a tower by randjb

We were on the second level of the Eiffel Tower and Debbie wanted to go to the top. Chesirae and I demurred. The building behind Debbie is the Maine-Montparnasse Tower, or Tour Montparnasse. Built around 1970, the Parisians reacted to it by banning any building taller than seven stories. They say the view from the tower is the best in all Paris because, from it, the tower is not part of the view.

Eiffel Tower by randjb

Far more impressive and imposing in person than in any picture, the best that can be done is to try to find an angle that gives some indication of the how massive the tower is.
