Tangier Kasbah, Morocco, by Bennytheball
This is the tourist's first sighting of the Tangier Kasbah when exiting from the ferry port, access to the Medina and Kasbah is by keeping to the left of this picture and looking for the Medina gate Bab Dbagh, after passing through, continuing the short distance uphill and turning right, the way to the Medina is signposted on walls.

Tangier tomb of Ibn Battouta by Bennytheball
The entrance to the tomb chamber and contact phone number for the caretaker who will open the door and let historians and other interested parties have access to the premises. A tip of 20 dirhams is normal practice for this service.

Tangier Medina, Zaouia Aissaoua by Bennytheball
A Sufi shrine in Place Aissawa, Tangier Medina, this is a temple of the eccentric brotherhood of the same name who distinguish themselves by showman acts of walking on hot coals, self-mutilation and catching cobra and viper snakes, whose poison to which they have an acquired immunity.

Tangier Medina, tomb of Ibn Batouta info plaque... by Bennytheball
A tourist trail information plaque is attached to the wall of the tomb, and reads ( verbatim)...... "This simple and sober building is dedicated to the memory of a universally made famous by his travels around the world during the 14th century. Abu Abdullah Muhammed Ibn Ibrahim Allouati at Tanji, Ibn Battouta says, is indeed born in Tangier February 24 1304 ( 17 Rajab 703) he left his hometown in 1325 to perform the pilgimage to Mecca and returned there after 29 years of adventures in which is present 44 countries, having travelled to North Africa, Egypt, Palestine and Syria, Medina and Mecca,Iraq and Persia, Southern Arabia, Yemen and East Africa, Asia Minor, and Constantinople, Southern Russia and Central Asia, India, Muslim Maldives and Ceylon Sumatra and China. After a brief stay in Tangier (1346-1349) he returned to Andalusia (Granada) and travelled to the kingdom of Morocco, the Sahara and West Africa. In 1368-69 Ibn Battouta died leaving behind him the story of his journey, Ibn Jouzay, dictated at the request of Sultan Abu Anan Merenid. The world completed in 1355 in Fez, is entitled to present those who like to reflect on the sights of cities and wonders of travel, but it is known to Rihial Ibn Battouta."

Deep in the confusion of the narrow Medina streets the tomb can be found in the street of the same name, Rue Ibn Battouta, better described as a narrow alleyway which also leads to adjacent private residences. Informal direction signs are painted on the walls of buildings leading to the tomb, A tourist information board is printed on one wall of the tomb detailing the fascinating history of the 14 th century explorer, who managed to travel most of the known world of that time on horseback, camels and wooden sailing ships, long before the invention of the steam engine!

This small shop, located on the way from the Petit Socco to the Kasbah Bab Haha gate, displays a colourful array of carpets and rugs for sale, manufactured on an ancient hand and foot-operated loom, a pleasant proprietor allows unrestricted examination of his stock and photography.
