Église Saint-Étienne - Trèbes - Main altar by Beausoleil
Trèbes is a town on the Aude River and the Canal du Midi. It is in the parish of Carcassonne and the church is Église Saint-Étienne (Saint Stephen). The church has a nave with seven bays and six side chapels. It has been listed as a historical monument since September 3 , 1974. It is only open on Sunday mornings for Mass and by appointment but is beautiful so if you aren't there on a Sunday morning, call and have it opened for you. On the Sunday we were there, they served coffee before the service and were very friendly and welcoming.

Périgueux - Saint Front Cathedral - cross in a side chapel by Beausoleil
The Cathedral in Perigueux is famous for having five domes. What surprised us was that even with five domes, it seemed small inside. There are some beautiful wood carvings, including a carved walnut 17th century altarpiece and some impressive sculptures. The first thing that catches your eye though is the very ornate chandelier over the main altar. It was one of three used for the marriage of Napoleon III in Paris. Napoleon then gifted it to the Cathedral in Perigueux.

Église Saint-Martin de Veules-les-Roses by Beausoleil
The church dates to the 16th century except for the 18th century bell tower. It hss remarkable carved sandstone pillars as well as a pipe organ from 1628 that is still in working order. In the choir the restoration of the vault in the past few years revealed a remarkable fresco that had been forgotten. It is now on glorious display. The pews are numbered so were presumably assigned. I'm not sure I've seen the numbers before so that was interesting.

The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives was founded in the 11th century. A thousand years later, the abbey church, adjoining convent buildings, the cloister courtyard and chapter house make it one of the most complete sets of monastic architecture in Normandy.

Saint-Vincent Cathedral of Saint-Malo by Beausoleil
We were visiting Brittany for a week and wanted to revisit Saint-Malo so on a sunny morning we drove northeast to the city. We parked near the ferry port, entered through Porte Dinan and found a nice restaurant for lunch before walking through the Old Town section. It couldn't have been a more perfect Fall day. The church was founded in dedication to Saint Vincent of Saragossa and is a national monument of France. The very modern stained glass is by Jean Le Moal.

Église de Saint Germain des Prés by Beausoleil
The church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is an old Benedictine abbey of Paris founded in 543 by the Merovingian king Childebert I and the bishop of Paris Saint Germain. The abbey has had several names including Saint-Vincent and Sainte-Croix. It is a royal abbey and is directly subject to the Pope. The current choir was built in the middle of the 12th century in the Gothic style and consecrated by Pope Alexander III on April 21, 1163. It is one of the first French Gothic buildings and in the world. After the Revolution, all abbeys were abolished and St. Germain became a saltpetre factory. Worship was restored April 29, 1803. Since then, the church has been a parish church. Between 1821 and 1854 the church was restored by the architects Étienne-Hippolyte Godde and Victor Baltard and was classified as a historic monument in 1862.
