Seeing the Northern Lights (NLs) was on my bucket list and this winter I had the time/money and decided to go. All my Vegas friends passed on the trip. OK, I will go by myself. Booked a week at the 9th Ave Hostel, flew to Fairbanks Feb. 3rd. Got lucky this night. The NLs really fired off and we all got some good photos of the pulsating lights.

I went back out to Chandalar Ranch Sat. the 6th and the sky really lit up. I did not have a tripod that night, but got some decent shots by holding the camera on the railing upstairs for 20 seconds.

It was the weekend of Chinese New Year and Chandalar Ranch was packed with Chinese. Many were staying there rather than FAI. It has separate rooms, dorms, guests can cook their own food. Many other activities available all year.

Chandalar Ranch by vegasmike6
Several tour companies use Chandalar Ranch for viewing the NLs. About 25 miles from FAI, you are away from city lights, on a hill and the balcony faces North. Perfect place to see the NLs. Get your photos, inside for bathroom, warm up, coffee, hot choc. snack then back out. All of use were in/out the entire time we were at Chandalar.

The NLs were pulsating for several hours Sat. night. We all felt very lucky to be there that night. This is why we spent the time/money to come to FAI. We got our moneys worth Sat. night.

Best shot I got at AC. Finally got a rainbow of colors instead of just green. It is now after midnight and Matthew said we had to start back to FAI to be back by 4am. We were all grateful we picked this night to take the AC tour.
