Guingamp - Basilique Notre Dame de Bon Secours - the Black Virgin, a pilgrimage destination by Beausoleil
The principal chapel, and a reason that many visitors come here, is the Chapel of the Black Virgin on the north side of the basilica. The statue of the black Virgin and infant Jesus is ancient although its origins are unclear, and in the 17th century was a major pilgrim destination, because of which parts of the church such as the oratory were expanded. The rest of this chapel is also interesting: the 12 statues of the apostles that overlook the black Virgin are a 19th century addition, as is the mosaic floor that is made from marble and shows a labyrinth, reminding visitors of the difficult path that must be followed to reach spiritual enlightenment.

Statue of St. Anthony of Padua in St. Pierre de Montmartre in Paris by Beausoleil
St. Pierre, around the corner from Sacre Coeur, is one of the oldest churches in Paris. There was a Roman Temple followed by a Merovingian Church and then other churches and abbeys until the St. Pierre we see today (with additions) was started in 1133 and consecrated in 1147. It has been deconsecrated and reconsecrated over the years, bombed during the war and desecrated during the various revolutions. Much remains and much has been added. It is a magical place that I find much more interesting to visit than nearby Sacre Coeur. In addition to the ancient statues, there is marvelous modern stained glass by the master stained glass window maker Max Ingrand, and these wonderful bronze doors by the Italian, Tommaso Gismondi, were added in 1980.

Avebury Manor by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are the church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. This was an Australian tourist demonstrating the antique exercise chair for the benefit of all of us who were too shy to try it. He did a marvelous job and we all got photos as we admired his courage.
