14th Century Chapel at Château de Beauregard by Beausoleil
This chapel was built in the 14th century and it was located on the route of Saint Jacques de Compostela. On the side are stone carvings of shells Saint Jacques. Inside, two plaques commemorate Count Alain du Pavillon and one of his sons. It's a lovely little walk from the château but is unfortunately in ruins.

Château de Beauregard from the back by Beausoleil
The Château de Beauregard is a Renaissance castle in the Loire Valley of France and is slightly north of the village of Cellettes. The ruins of a chapel, prior to the fifteenth century, are still visible in the park and have stone carvings of the shell of the pilgrims going to Saint Jacques de Compostela in Spain. The most impressive part of the castle is the Gallery of Portraits where the walls are decorated with 327 portraits of famous people who lived between 1328 (date of the beginning of the reign of Philippe VI of France) and 1643 (death of Louis XIII). The floor is decorated with 5500 Delft tiles so you can look up or down and be impressed. The ceiling is also brilliantly decorated with the use of lapis lazuli paint for the blue. At the time it was done, the lapis lazuli cost more than gold so it is a very expensive ceiling. The gardens are extensive and themed. The outstanding feature (to us) was the 14th century chapel which was located on the route of St Jacques de Compostela. On the side you will find carved stone shells of Saint Jacques. The chapel is, unfortunately, in ruins. Inside, two plaques commemorate Count Alain du Pavillon and one of his sons.

Garden at Château de Beauregard by Beausoleil
There are extensive gardens at Château de Beauregard, some quite wild and others very formal. There are signs to assist the visitor, but unfortunately, they don't always appear where they might be most useful. In autumn, though, there are lovely fall colors.

Sheep at the entrance/exit of Château de Beauregard by Beausoleil
There are two species of sheep at Château de Beauregard, the sheep of Hungary and the sheep of Sologne. Most interesting to us were the sheep of Hungary that are nicknamed 'wolf killers' because of their large twisted horns allowing them to defend themselves from their enemies. They also have a long thick wool that does not need to be shorn as they do it themselves by rubbing against the trees. The Sologne sheep are all born a chocolate color and it remains on their head and the legs.

Château de Beauregard Cabinet of the Bells (Cabinet des Grelots) by Beausoleil
Created by Francesco Scibec de Carpi, famous cabinetmaker of King Henry II, it owes its name to the bell, escutcheon of the Thier family, which is used as a motif of ornamentation. Château de Beauregard near Cellettes by Beausoleil
We had an older GPS unit and the entrance to the Château had been moved so we wandered a bit. Just stay on the D956 and the Château is clearly marked. If you are coming from the north, you will see the Château before you arrive in Cellettes.
