Leaving Notre Dame de Chartres to return to Paris by Beausoleil
We had a lovely day trip from Paris to Chartres where we visited the Cathedral and the stained glass museum and had a very nice lunch. It was a pleasant escape from busy Paris and fun to revisit a beloved Cathedral. It was especially nice this year since Notre Dame de Paris burned and we couldn't visit it on our trip.

Labyrinth in the Jardins de l'Évêché behind Chartres Cathedral by Beausoleil
There is a famous labyrinth inside the Cathedral. It's only uncovered on Friday so many people visit and never see it. However, in the peaceful gardens behind the Cathedral is a second labyrinth that is hardly ever seen and easily accessed any day of the week.
Musée des Beaux Arts by Beausoleil
Behind Chartres Cathedral are the peaceful Jardins de l'Évêché and the Beaux Arts Museum. As many times as we've enjoyed the garden, we have never visited the museum so this was the day. The museum in the former episcopal palace and has classic and modern art, plus antique harpsichords which were a real draw for us. They also had a small display of antique musical instruments that was fun.

North Transept of Chartres Cathedral by Beausoleil
When you leave the Stained Glass Museum, this is the view that greets you. The stunning north transept of Notre Dame de Chartres with the Coronation of the Virgin Mary above the main door.

Saint Michael by Hortense Damiron by Beausoleil
The crypt of the museum which is vaulted has modern stained glass displayed. The juxtaposition of the ancient vaulted ceiling and the modern stained glass is stunning. This particular window is part of the Chapelle de la Résidence Catherine Labouret in Paris.

Explanation of the stained glass windows in Chartres Cathedral by Beausoleil
This room is dedicated to explaining the windows in the Cathedral across the street. It is nice because they are at you level so you can see all the detail. These are not stained glass and are not backlit, however.

King David from The Tree of Jesse window by Beausoleil
This was a bottom panel of a larger crown-shaped window. David playing his harp attracted me. This window was in the first Salon du Vitrail (stained glass exhibition) in 1980.

Centre international du vitrail (Stained Glass Museum) - Chartres by Beausoleil
We've visited Chartres many times but this was our first visit to the stained glass museum. I'm not sure why unless it was time constraint that kept us from it before. It's right across from the Cathedral so an easy walk. We both paint so enjoy art, and stained glass is magnificent art and often lasts longer than any other medium. This is an international organization to preserve older stained glass and promote the creation of modern stained glass. They do exhibitions, workshops and all sorts of recovery efforts. They also exhibit modern stained glass. We have a particular interest because we donated a stained glass window to a church we attended many years ago. They built an addition and needed windows and it seemed a worthy cause. There were a set of seven and I wanted the one with the bird in it. There was a bit of competition but I got my bird window.

Fun mural on a business in Chartres by Beausoleil
We saw several cute murals walking around Chartres. You could make a day of finding and taking photos of town murals. This was on a hair salon and pulled a moment out of history . . . and also made a pretty dull building look very interesting.

Le Café des Arts in Chartres by Beausoleil
A very fun and friendly café in Chartres. When we saw pintade (guinea hen) on the menu, we couldn't resist going inside. It was served with a cider gravy that was delicious. Fun place to eat around the corner from the Cathedral.

Detail of the choir screen at Notre Dame de Chartres by Beausoleil
Books have been written about Chartres Cathedral and I encourage you to read some of them. It is my absolute favorite cathedral in the entire world (not that my research pool is terribly large) and I'm not sure what it is that attracts me. The first time we visited Chartres was fortunately a sunny day so the stained glass was spectacular. However, I was more struck by the floor of the ancient church. It was very worn stone and the sun shining through the stained glass windows onto the floor worn slick by 800 years of feet caught my imagination. I could not begin to imagine the number of people who had trod the floor before me and who would continue to walk there long after I had left. There are 176 stained glass windows and the color most overwhelming is the famous Chartres blue. I'm not sure if the windows or their reflections on the floor or the white choir screen are the more beautiful. Another thing that enchanted me on my first viewing that still delights me after many years is the beautiful white choir screen. It's a later addition to the church having been finished in 1714 but the perfection of the tiny stories in stone surrounding the altar is sheer magic. It has recently been cleaned so is even more beautiful than previously.
