View from the train window returning to Paris from a lovely day in Chartres by Beausoleil
Chartres is a very pleasant train ride from Paris and a great day trip. It is also nice to get out of the city for a day and enjoy the countryside and a smaller town.

Chartres - Eglise Saint Pierre, another beautiful Gothic Church in Chartres by Beausoleil
St. Pierre is the former abbey church of a Benedictine monastery built between the 10th and 13th centuries , the Saint-Pierre church became a parish in 1803 and is one of the more interesting monuments in Chartres. It would undoubtedly have more visitors if it did not live in the shadow of the famous Cathedral of Notre Dame. It is definitely worth a visit though.

Chartres - View of Cathedral Notre Dame from the Eure River by Beausoleil
A friend took a photo from here many years ago and I wanted to find the spot. You just walk along the Eure River until you find the little parking area and look up and see the magnificent cathedral. It's the perfect view.

Chartres - A school group just visited the Cathedral with an impressive guide by Beausoleil
We were looking for lunch and as we turned the corner beside the Cathedral, this lady led a group of small children down the Cathedral steps. They had a very impressive guide. She looks like she just stepped out of the Middle Ages.

Chartres - Sun Dial on the Cathedral by Beausoleil
This is hard to notice on the side of the very grand Cathedral but as you walk around to the South Portal, look up at the corner and this sun dial will be telling you the time of day . . . or close to it.

Chartres - Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres - One of the Rose Windows by Beausoleil
The stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral are held to be one of the best-preserved and most complete set of medieval stained glass, notably celebrated for their colors, especially their cobalt blue usually referred to as "Chartres Blue". I've always been fascinated by the Choir sculptures, a stone wall with sculpted scenes that tell the story of Mary and Jesus. The wall is over 6 meters tall and 100 meters long, and has four levels: a base, clerestory, 40 niches, and a stone lace crown. The wall was commissioned in the 16th century to keep the laity out of the liturgical choir. On our previous trip they were in the process of being cleaned so we didn't see all of them. On this trip, the cleaning was done and it was magnificent. If you can't read, this is the bible in stone and in the Middle Ages, most people couldn't read. Another favorite part of the church is the ancient stone floor. It is worn and polished to a sheen. Every time I see it, I wonder how many people have walked there before me. There is an incredible feeling of history and continuity here.
