Tour de l'Horloge du palais de la Cité by Beausoleil
They have recently (2012) renovated the beautiful clock on the tower of the Conciergerie. I have photos of it before the restoration and this one of the shiny, restored clock. This was the first public clock in Paris in 1370. It has undergone quite a few additions and restorations and many people walk past and don't even see it. Look up . . .

Musée d'Orsay in Paris - the Clock by Beausoleil
The museum is the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. It holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. When you go to Paris looking for the Impressionists, this is the place to go. The other Paris musum holding a great catalog of Impressionists is the Marmottan-Monet in the 16th arrondissement. Both are not to be missed. The Orsay also has special exhibits and they are always excellent . . . and very crowded. This is a favorite tourist photo. You look through the giant clock to see Sacre Coeur on a distant hill in Paris.

Horloge à Automate near the Pompidou Center by Beausoleil
There were signs to "Horloge à Automate" so we followed them into the Passage de l'Horloge and there above us was the clock. We didn't see it in action but trust that it is automated.

Detail of the choir screen at Notre Dame de Chartres by Beausoleil
Books have been written about Chartres Cathedral and I encourage you to read some of them. It is my absolute favorite cathedral in the entire world (not that my research pool is terribly large) and I'm not sure what it is that attracts me. The first time we visited Chartres was fortunately a sunny day so the stained glass was spectacular. However, I was more struck by the floor of the ancient church. It was very worn stone and the sun shining through the stained glass windows onto the floor worn slick by 800 years of feet caught my imagination. I could not begin to imagine the number of people who had trod the floor before me and who would continue to walk there long after I had left. There are 176 stained glass windows and the color most overwhelming is the famous Chartres blue. I'm not sure if the windows or their reflections on the floor or the white choir screen are the more beautiful. Another thing that enchanted me on my first viewing that still delights me after many years is the beautiful white choir screen. It's a later addition to the church having been finished in 1714 but the perfection of the tiny stories in stone surrounding the altar is sheer magic. It has recently been cleaned so is even more beautiful than previously.

Musée d'Orsay - view through the clock to Sacre Coeur by Beausoleil
This is one of my favorite views in Paris. When we visit the Orsay, I always take a photo through one of the clocks. The Basilique of Sacre Coeur sits on Montmartre hill and begs to be photographed. This one was through the window in the restaurant.

The renovated restaurant in the Musée d'Orsay by Beausoleil
The Orsay is in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts train station built between 1898 and 1900. The museum holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. It is where you will find most of the Impressionist paintings you are looking for. The other place in Paris to find a lot of Impressionists is the Marmottan-Monet Museum in the 16 arrondissement (district). I highly recommend both museums.

The Treasurer's House - York - the two-story clock by Beausoleil
This clock in the Treasurer's House in York runs for 30 hours on one winding but it is so long they had to cut through the floor so it goes into the hall below. The Treasurer’s House was once divided into three houses. In the late 1900s Frank Green, a wealthy industrialist and passionate collector renovated Treasurer’s House to showcase his collection in historical surroundings. The 13 period rooms house antique furniture, ceramics, textiles and paintings from a 300-year heritage. The 2,000 year history of the house includes a supposedly haunted Roman road below the cellar and Edwardian servants' quarters in the attics with 13 period rooms in between. It is in the period rooms they house the collection and tell the story of Frank Green.

Knightshayes Court - Staircase and Grandfather Clock by Beausoleil
The house was built by Sir John Heathcoat Amory, the grandson of John Heathcoat, creator of the mechanized bobbin lace-making machine and owner of a lace factory in Tiverton. The house is marvelous Victorian and there are two lovely gardens. There is a tea room in the former stables and walks throughout the estate.

Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life - Carved clock and Queen Victoria by Beausoleil
The Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life looks quite small but when you get inside, it goes up and down and in and out and is really rather a good-sized museum. They even have a real locomotive engine inside and it's set up so you can have your picture taken as the engineer. There are exhibits covering Mid Devon prehistory to current time. Of particular interest are the exhibits on the lace making industry that is there. The Tiverton Tourist Office is directly inside the museum and both are worth a visit.

Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin Lynton by Beausoleil
Lynton, at the top of the cliff, is more like a real town and much less like a tourist stop. There are also great views from many spots here. We walked all over and then visited the small but very nice museum before taking the Cliff Railway back to Lynmouth and our car. There seemed to be a picnic area behind this church. At least a few families were having a picnic as we passed.

St. Ia, the St. Ives Parish Church by Beausoleil
Walking from the train station to town looking for a restaurant we passed the lovely parish church. It is dedicated to the Celtic saint St. Ia, and also to St. Andrew, patron saint of Fishermen and St Peter, the Rock. The church is built of Cornish granite and its tower is one of the tallest of the Cornish churches, over eighty feet high. The present church building was consecrated in 1434. In 2010 the church celebrated the 600th anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone.
