Abbaye de Bon Repos - Cloister and Oculus 1 and 2 by José Piez by Beausoleil
A ruined abbey on the Blavet River section of the Nantes-Brest Canal. The adjoining building holds Les Minéraux de l'Abbaye with information about various minerals and a rock shop that includes some lovely jewelry. The abbey is a ruin but well cared for and they have an artist in residence each year so there is always interesting art. There is a son et lumière in the summer. On this trip (2021) José Piez was the artist in residence and you were encouraged to play all his instruments. It was originally a Cistercian Abbey built in the 1100s. Their web site has a fascinating history.

Lacock Abbey - Interior by Beausoleil
Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery in the Augustinian order. It remained a convent until the dissolution in the 16th century when it was then sold to Sir William Sharington who converted the convent into a residence where he and his family lived. The house was built over the old cloisters and its main rooms are on the first floor. The Tudor stable courtyard to the north of the house has retained many of its original features including the brewhouse and bakehouse but the rest of the house is a very mixed combination of styles due to constant changes and improvements over the years. The house was inherited by the Talbot family, and during the 19th century was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what may be the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows. The house and the surrounding village of Lacock were given to the National Trust in 1944. The abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum in the old Abbey barn.

Cloisters of Exeter Cathedral (with picnic tables) by Beausoleil
We've never seen picnic tables in a cloister before so this was fascinating. It was definitely not like any cloister we've seen before but was somewhat peaceful.

The Cathedral in Cahors is a national monument. It is an example of the transition between late Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The cloisters are lovely and very peaceful. The stained glass inside the church is both ancient and modern and well worth a visit.

Abbaye de Caunes-Minervois - Cloister by Beausoleil
The Abbaye de Caunes-Minervois was founded in 780 and dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, the ancient Carolingian church was replaced by the present building in different stages of construction. The apse and towers are Romanesque while the nave and porch are Gothic. Abbot Jean d'Alibert (1598-1626) made good use of the local red marble that can be seen in abundance inside the church. Restoration is ongoing.
