Fox Talbot Photography Museum at Lacock Abbey by Beausoleil
The historic Fenton Collection - has been transferred from the British Film Institute to the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock, Britain's birthplace of photography. The collection contains hundreds of cameras, optical devices and toys from the eighteenth century to the late 1980s as well as nearly 3,500 photographic images ranging from the earliest processes through to the first part of the twentieth century. My favorite was a photo of Louis Daguerre who invented the Daguerreotype. I have a wonderful old Daguerreotype of a couple of my ancestors and treasure it. Unfortunately, no one in the family can now identify the man and his wife. My great-grandparents and grandparents all loved sending the photo postcards that were so popular many years ago and I have a lot of those with messages on the other side. This was their idea of Facebook, I think.

The Warming Room at Lacock Abbey by Beausoleil
Lacock Abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery in the Augustinian order. It remained a convent until the dissolution in the 16th century when it was then sold to Sir William Sharington who converted the convent into a residence where he and his family lived. The house was built over the old cloisters and its main rooms are on the first floor. The Tudor stable courtyard to the north of the house has retained many of its original features including the brewhouse and bakehouse but the rest of the house is a very mixed combination of styles due to constant changes and improvements over the years. The house was inherited by the Talbot family, and during the 19th century was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what may be the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows. The house and the surrounding village of Lacock were given to the National Trust in 1944. The abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum in the old Abbey barn.

Cuneiform tablet at the Fox Talbot Museum by Beausoleil
Henry Talbot was one of the first to translate Assyrian cuneiform writing and this example is in the museum at Lacock Abbey. It is also home to the historic Fenton Collection - that has been transferred from the British Film Institute to the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock, Britain's birthplace of photography. The collection contains hundreds of cameras, optical devices and toys from the eighteenth century to the late 1980s as well as nearly 3,500 photographic images ranging from the earliest processes through to the first part of the twentieth century.

Sundial at Avebury Manor by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are the church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. When you exit the house, you enter the gardens. They vary according to time of year as gardens must and we were there in May when there was not yet much in bloom. It was still very pretty and obvious that later visitors would have quite a treat.

Avebury Manor Tea Room (in the library) by Beausoleil
Avebury is a village in the center of a huge stone circle (kind of like a village in the middle of Stonehenge) and since a village needs a church and a Manor House, you can visit both either before or after you visit the standing stone circles. There is also the Red Lion Inn for refreshment although we loved the tea room set in the Manor House library.

This was an Australian tourist demonstrating the antique exercise chair for the benefit of all of us who were too shy to try it. He did a marvelous job and we all got photos as we admired his courage.
