Headed south on the A20 by Beausoleil
We were driving from Tourtoirac to Trebes from gite to another on a Saturday so since it was a long drive, we took the AutoRoute. There are tolls, but it's much faster and you don't get lost. The scenery is usually great but you miss driving through all the small towns and villages . . . That's why it's faster.

We got in our car and quickly drove back to Hautefort to park behind the chateau and walk down to the Auberge du Parc for an superb lunch. It's a lovely walk between the parking and the restaurant too.

Terrasson-Lavilledieu - View from the Old Bridge over the Vézère River by Beausoleil

Terrasson-Lavilledieu - The Fountain of Saint Julien by Beausoleil
The town of Terrasson-Lavilledieu is located on both sides of the Vézère River. The touristic side of town is south of the river and the more modern side is on the north. In the Old Town area you can climb up from the river to Place de l'Abbaye for spectacular view of the town and surrounding countryside. There are several fountains of note, the lovely church of Saint Sour and gardens to visit. The fountain that can be seen here was erected on the site of the Saint-Julien church and has seen its architecture modified over time, but the water that flows still comes from the same source although the church of Saint Julien was long ago destroyed.

Terrasson-Lavilledieu - Le Pont Vieux (The Old Bridge) by Beausoleil
Up at Place de l'Abbaye by Eglise Saint-Sour, there is a viewpoint over Terrasson-Lavilledieu where you can look down and see the Old Bridge and much of the town and the beautiful Vézère River that winds its way through the town.

Construction started under Bertrand de Rouffignac (1491-1505) and the monastery church was completed by Bertrand de la Faye (1520-1540) in a flamboyant Gothic style. The new buildings were burnt down during the Wars of Religion in 1569, leading to the decline of the abbey. The church was restored in the 19th century. When Saint Julien burnt down, Saint Sour became the parish church. They often have summer light shows on the church that are very colorful.

Place de l'Abbaye in Terrasson-Lavilledieu has a fabulous viewpoint over the town of Terrasson-Lavilledieu. You can gain access to the Ramparts here or on the opposite side is the entrance to Eglise Saint Sour.
