Church of Santa Croce by randjb

Florence and the church of Santa Croce as view from the top of the Duomo's cupola. To the right, halfway up the green hill is the Piazzale Michelangelo, which provides its own beautiful views of Florence. From inside the city, the beautiful hills of Tuscany are rarely visible and Florence's lovely setting is easy to miss.

Palazzo Vecchio by randjb

This view from the Duomo's cupola is of the tower in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's town hall. I have pictures of the inside of the Palazzo published earlier. The white building to the right and slightly higher than the tower is Forte di Belvedere, also shown earlier. We stayed on top of the cupola for almost an hour, both because of the views and because we met a very nice gentleman from England with whom we shared stories.

Florence's original gate viewed from to Cupola del Brunelleschi of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, more commonly referred to as the Duomo. One very nice thing about Florence today is that inside the old city walls, calls are restricted. You can walk the streets the same way Dante did, rarely having to worry about automobile traffic. Of course, in August, the streets are jam packed with people.

The bell tower as seen from the cupola. The views from the top of the church are, I think, the best in Florence. You do have to get your tickets early if you want to climb the dome as it is one of the most popular attractions.

The edge of the cupola by randjb

Looking over the edge of Brunelleschi's dome down to the piazza below is a bit unnerving. I can't imagine being one of the bricklayers who stood on the edge of the unfinished dome doing their daily job. The base of the bell tower is in the upper right hand corner.

Brick pattern by randjb

Though this appears to be a simple wall of bricks, it is in fact one of the engineering feats that took Europe from Medieval times to the Renaissance. Brunelleschi figured out how to use both the herringbone pattern and an upside down arch that made building the dome without scaffolding possible. For centuries, no one could figure out how Brunelleschi built the dome but recent research seems to finally have figured it out. PBS NOVA did an excellent show on this mystery.

One of the stained glass windows viewed from inside the cathedral while climbing to the top. The close up view shows much more of the artistry than can be seen from the floor.

The ceiling of the Duomo by randjb

Painted by Giorgio Vasari, Vincenzo Borghini, and Federico Zuccaro around 1574, the ceiling frescoes cover a wealth of topics from the New Testament and Dante's Divine Comedy. While Dante did not invent the ideas of Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, much of our modern conception of them comes directly from his poem. Many of the Renaissance painters took Dante's words and created the images we associate with judgement day, Satan, and the like.
