Le Petit Moulin Kersigalec - our home for the week by Beausoleil
Ed trying to open the trick door to our gite. He quickly mastered it when we got locked in and wanted out. The little house sits next to a tiny lake and we had our own little boat on the lake. The owners were lovely; the cottage was perfect and we were out in the quiet and beautiful Breton countryside near the center of Brittany so we could visit anything. Perfect.

Checking a peacock at the Petit Palais by Beausoleil
The Petit Palais is the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts. It was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle and is located across from the Grand Palais on Avenue Winston-Churchill. As a city museum it is free of charge although you will pay for most special exhibits. There is an amazingly large and diverse collection of paintings along with furniture, decor and entire rooms on exhibit. There are ancient and medieval works, works from the French and Italian Renaissance and Flemish and Dutch paintings. You will find paintings from major French artists of the 19th century such as Delacroix, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Courbet among others. A new sculpture exhibit is to open in 2020 although the opening may be delayed by the corona virus lockdown.

Ed with Marie Stuart (Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots), Queen of France, 1542 to 1587 by Beausoleil
In the Luxembourg Gardens there is a series of white marble statues of women that flank the the central gardens and the pond in front of the Palais du Luxembourg. These are called the Serie des Reines et Femmes Illustres or queens and other illustrious women from the history of France. There are all sorts of marvelous statues hidden throughout the gardens and it's fun to look for them. When our youngest daughter was with us, we searched out the statue of George Sand for her. You can't miss the Statue of Liberty if you are from the USA. For others, follow your own interests or find statues by favorite sculptors.

Nunnington Hall - Entry by Beausoleil
Nunnington Hall is a beautiful Elizabethan manor house situated on the edge of the North York Moors. The river Rye runs past the house, flowing away from the village of Nunnington. A stone bridge over the river separates the grounds of the house from the village. The Hall stands within 8 acres of organically managed grounds. The Walled Garden contains lawns, orchards, formal rose beds, mixed borders, a Tea Garden, and an Iris Garden. The orchards are managed as wildflower meadows growing below the fruit trees of which most are traditional Ryedale varieties. Another feature of the gardens are the resident peacocks. Inside the 17th-century manor house you can visit the magnificent oak-paneled hall, family rooms, the nursery, the haunted room and the attics, with the famous Carlisle collection of miniature rooms fully furnished to reflect different periods. We were also fortunate enough to see an exhibit of watercolors by David Birtweistle.

Setting up a chess game to attract an opponent by Beausoleil
Ed saw a chess game sitting alone in the forest and couldn't help setting it up to see if he could entice someone to make the next move. It worked. We no sooner walked away than another gentleman hurried over to make his move. There is something a chess player can't resist about these outdoor games. Rievaulx Terrace, located in the North York Moors National Park, overlooks Rievaulx Abbey and is owned by the National Trust. The half-mile long grass terrace follows a serpentine course along a wooded escarpment designed to give multiple views of the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. There are two mid 18th century temples including the Ionic Temple, intended as a banqueting house, with elaborate ceiling paintings and fine 18th century furniture and the Tuscan Temple at the far end.

Posing with a Mini Cooper in the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life by Beausoleil
The Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life looks quite small but when you get inside, it goes up and down and in and out and is really rather a good-sized museum. They even have a real locomotive engine inside and it's set up so you can have your picture taken as the engineer. There are exhibits covering Mid Devon prehistory to current time. Of particular interest are the exhibits on the lace making industry that is there. The Tiverton Tourist Office is directly inside the museum and both are worth a visit.

At the marker to start the Stations of the Cross by Beausoleil
