Sagrada Familia inside: The canopy by randjb
The forest of trees, 52 or one for each week of the year, draws our sight into the canopy of light and shade.
Sagrada Familia inside: Tree trunk by randjb
The scalloped pillars are never quite straight and branch as they rise, architectural trees that make the base of the forest alive.
Sagrada Familia inside: The crossing by randjb
From the crossing, the trees tighten into two rows that create the nave. The colors change as the forest extends into the distance.
Sagrada Familia inside: The dome by randjb
The dome of the crossing as seen from some of the trees that surround it. The ever changing light and shapes make every part of the church a view point.

Color supersedes content in the stain glass windows.

Sagrada Familia inside: A change of hue by randjb
On the opposite aisle from the green to red shift, Gaudi shifts from a light green to blue. This is the morning side of the church, while the red shift is the sunset side.
Sagrada Familia inside: The nave by randjb
From the shadowed aisle to the brightness of the nave, the forest is every changing.
Sagrada Familia inside: the trees by randjb
Instead of simple pillars, Gaudi designed trees to create the nave. The trees extend high into the sky, but the sky might go on forever.

Sagrada Familia inside: window by randjb
The "stain glass" windows do not include pictures of saints or historical figures, rather they are light gatherers that bring in the various hues and shades that Gaudi wanted to have color his "forest."

Sagrada Familia inside: bathed in light by randjb
The green of the forest turns to red, summer to fall? The light creates awe that Gothic cathedrals no longer inspire.

Sagrada Familia inside: stairway to heaven by randjb
The stairways that lead up the apostle spires are both disguised and architecturally important features. As always, Gaudi assiduously avoids straight lines.

Sagrada Familia inside: dome of the crossing by randjb
The trees of the forest of the nave open wide at the crossing to reveal a golden dome, the apex of the sky.

Sagrada Familia inside: the crucifix by randjb
Suspended in air, the crucifix is a necessary, traditional element yet in Gaudi's vision a freeing and hopeful symbol.

Sagrada Familia by randjb
The view from the south side of the church looking at the Passion facade on the left and the Glory facade on the right still under construction. The church already towers over everything around it, but the tall spires have yet to be built!
Sagrada Familia from up high by randjb
This photo was taken from about the 10th floor of a hotel across from the "Mary" side of the church - that's her spire they are working on in the middle. Notice the size of the base compared to the other towers. That give you an idea of how tall her spire will be, and there will be five spires even taller than hers!
Spire on the Passion facade by randjb
Taken from about 100 feet above the ground, this is one of the 12 spires for the apostles. Eight have been built and four more will be added to the Glory or entrance side of the church.
Sagrada Familia from higher up by randjb
Taken from about 100 feet above the ground from a hotel across from the church, this gives you some idea of how large the upper part of the church will be. Remember that there is about 100 feet of church below the picture you do not see!
Detail from Nativity wall by randjb
Despite the enormous size of the church, the entire Nativity facade is covered in sculptures and design elements.

The northeastern side of the church has so many sculptures, I would have needed days to see them all.
Nativity facade Sagrada Familia by randjb
This is only a small piece of the entire wall, and this is only one side of the church.
Nativity wall entrance by randjb
The glass and sculpture above the entrance from the Nativity side of the church. This side most accurately represents what Gaudi had in mind for the outside of his creation.
Looking across the Nativity facade by randjb
The Nativity facade was well on its way to being built during Gaudi's lifetime and received his personal supervision. The Passion facade, by contrast, was not started until 1954, almost 30 years after Gaudi died. Construction on the Glory facade began in 2002 and is still in progress. This will eventually be the main entrance to the church. Some of the fourth side of structure, what I would call the Virgin Mary side, was designed by another architect before Gaudi and reflects a more traditional Gothic look.
Entrance from the Nativity side by randjb
The entrance to the church from the Nativity facade is massively decorated and the decorations extend in each direction beyond the photo.

Looking up towards the four "apostle" spires, you can see some of the unusual architecture Gaudi designed. The walls themselves are full of curves and shapes that make them almost alive. Gaudi rarely used straight lines and when he did he set them at angles to each other to avoid squares and rectangles.
