Gite La Truffière du Portail - Farm across the street by Beausoleil
The Romanesque Abbey of Saint-Pierre-Ès-Liens de Tourtoirac is one of the oldest in the department and was one of the largest monastic establishments in Périgord. The beginning of construction dates back to the 11th century. At the end of the 13th century, a Benedictine community of 34 monks lived in the monastery. Today there is a Friends of the Abbey group of 130 who are trying to complete the renovation of the site. The village of Tourtoirac is known for the abbey and also for the Grottes de Tourtoirac, nearby caves you can visit. The caves are accessed by a lift (elevator) that descends 25 meters and then there is a flat walkway around the cave system that is suitable both for wheelchairs and strollers. Visits last about one hour. You may want a jacket since it is quite chilly in the caves.

Yearly Cycle of the Truffle by Beausoleil
These are truffles as in mushrooms / fungi, not chocolate truffles. Two separate and completely delightful things. We toured a truffle farm and I was having so much fun I forgot to take pictures but we received this handout and it will have to do.

Our backyard sheep by Beausoleil
We rented a Gite de France on a sheep farm and I wanted to get photos so I could paint the sheep when we returned home. They managed to stay out of sight for a couple days, but this evening we returned from sightseeing to a part of the flock munching away at some grass and tree trimmings in our back yard. I was thrilled.

A foggy start to the day. by Beausoleil
Just up the road from our gite was this little farm and the donkey greeted us every morning as we drove out. The fog persisted in early mornings for most of our week near the river Lot.
