We passed several lavender fields but none were blooming yet. Ours at home has already bloomed so this is a different climate. It will be beautiful and smell wonderful here in about a month.
Châteauneuf du Pape - Notre Dame de L’Assomption by Beausoleil
Châteauneuf du Pape is famous for its wine so we decided to spend a day visiting. It is a French wine appellation known for its bold Grenache-based red blends. Officially, the region makes both red and white wines with up to 13 different grapes. (Unofficially, there are 20 varieties used in the region!). The whites were a surprise to us and since we had fish for lunch, we were happy to discover them. The town dates back to the 11th century and was the summer home of the Avignon popes. You can park for free and wander all over the town and when you get up near the Château, the views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular. There are lots of pleasant restaurants around the fountain square and wine tastings all over the area. Stop at the tourist office or Maison des Vins - Vinadea at 8 Rue Maréchal Foch for more information about where to go for tastings.
Châteauneuf du Pape - The very steep la rue de l’Eglise is called “rompe cul” and it is said the falls were so numerous over the centuries that it is still possible to hear the cries and swearing of the victims of this street by Beausoleil

Rue “Rompe Cul”, from the Provençal “Roumpo qiéu” which means “Break ass” is very steep and although difficult to climb, be even more wary on the way down! It is said in Châteauneuf-du-Pape that the falls were so numerous over the centuries that it is still possible to hear the cries and swearing of the victims of this street.
