Tapestry of the Fontaine Saint-Sulpice covering the Marché Poésie by Beausoleil
The Marché Poésie fills the Place Saint Sulpice in front of the famous church each spring. This also covers the beautiful Fontaine Saint-Sulpice (alternatively known as the Fountain of the Orators or the Fountain of the Bishops) so the poets placed a picture of the fountain where you would normally actually see it. A nice idea but the fountain is prettier. The Marché Poésie is great fun if you are ever in Paris while it is happening. Stop and chat with the vendors and you may be given a free book . . . in French of course.

Pavillon Davioud in the Luxembourg Gardens by Beausoleil
The Senate welcomes, free of charge, in the Davioud pavilion of the Jardin du Luxembourg, in July and August, exhibitions of paintings, sculptures or photographs, subject to the assumption by the exhibitors of the costs of the partitions that the Senate installs for welcome them and insurance. Exhibitors are allocated a space of 90 m² for a period of 14 days under their sole responsibility. Nearly a million bees are foraging around the seventeen hives of the Rucher du Luxembourg (rucher meaning apiary). Each year they produce about 450 pounds of honey which is collected and sold every Autumn at the Orangerie du Luxembourg just a few minutes walk up the garden path. The hives have a color code on them not just for human benefit but the bees will associate with these so that they go back to their specific hive, and although these are the modern beehives, there are historical ones called skeps preserved within the Pavillon Davioud, which is where the beekeepers office, the school and the honey extraction centre are located. Not many people realize that bees do need water so there is a water fountain in the same style as the beehives designed specifically for the bees. It’s located in the middle of the enclosure with all the hives surrounding. Bees are thriving in Paris due to a policy of not using pesticides within any public gardens or parks.

L'embacle Fountain by Beausoleil
L'embacle Fountain (Ice Jam) was given to Paris by the Quebec government in 1984. It symbolizes the breaking up of ice in the St. Lawrence River in the Spring. The Quebecois architect Alfred Gindre and sculptor Charles Daudelin created this stylized fountain. On initial glance it appears the sidewalk is buckling but a closer look reveals the fountain beneath the large bronze slabs lifting from the sidewalk. It is often mistakenly attributed to Guillaume Daudelin, undoubtedly due to them having the same last name. The fountain is located at Place du Québec, a tiny square in Paris where you can find the sculpture, the church Saint-Germain-des-Pres and the famous café Les Deux Magots. The fountain was restored in 2011 in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Quebec Government Office in Paris.

Medici Fountain at the Luxembourg Gardens by Beausoleil
The Luxembourg Gardens are located in the 6th arrondissement. In 1612 they were created by Marie de' Medici, the widow of King Henry IV of France, for her new Luxembourg Palace. The gardens include an orchard with a variety of old and forgotten apples, an apiary to learn about bee-keeping, a rose garden and greenhouses with a collection of orchids. The garden has 106 statues spread throughout the park, the beautiful and romantic Medici fountain and an Orangerie. Children have puppet shows and pony rides along with playgrounds and little boats to sail in the pond. Adults can play chess, tennis, bridge or take exercise classes. There are free photography exhibits on the fences and free concerts at the bandstand. There is always something to do at the Luxembourg Gardens . . . or you can sit quietly and read a book.

La Place Georges-Moustaki and Fontaine Guy Lartigue by Beausoleil
This was our little shopping area at the base of rue Mouffetard. We had an apartment nearby and got to know the boulanger, pharmacist, a couple nice restaurants and attended Saint Medard church on the square. It is a very welcoming place and there is dancing to live music on Sundays at the square.

Place des Vosges is the oldest and arguably the most beautiful square in Paris. Cardinal Richelieu had an equestrian bronze of Louis XIII erected in the Place des Vosges where it still stands today. Cardinal Richelieu lived at no. 21 from 1615 to 1627. The Maison Victor Hugo is at no. 6.

Place des Vosges by Beausoleil
This is arguably the most beautiful square in Paris. We love to visit any time of year. When the weather is nice, it is always full of people. There is a playground for children, lots of grass, four fountains and plenty of seating. It's a lovely family place but everyone goes there.

Fontaine du Lycee Charlemagne by Beausoleil
When you walk along a part of the original wall surrounding Paris (located in a school playground) and come to the end of rue des Jardins Saint-Paul (there is no garden), you will find this beautiful fountain. It's is beside the Lycee Charlemagne and behind the beautiful church of Saint Paul et Saint Louis. You have to walk around the block to enter the church. We took the long way and went by way of Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine which was very quiet on a rainy afternoon. It is usually bustling but this was kind of nice for a change.

Fontaine Wallace at One rue du Rivoli by Beausoleil
There are Wallace Fountains all over Paris, great places to refill your water bottle. This one is at One rue du Rivoli opposite the St. Paul Metro stop. Wallace Fountains are public drinking fountains roughly designed by Sir Richard Wallace and sculpted by Charles-Auguste Lebourg. They are large cast-iron sculptures scattered throughout the city of Paris and a life-saver on a hot day. You can get maps to all the Wallace fountains so searching for them might be a fun Paris activity.

Square Saint-Medard with the Fontaine Guy Lartigue by Beausoleil
Our Boulanger was Saines to the left of the fountain in this photo. We ended most days here for our daily bread. The ladies took very good care of us and usually had our order bagged and ready when we got there. This despite the fact we seldom spent more than a euro or two. They were just nice people who had excellent bread.

From the Orangerie overlooking the Tuileries Gardens and the Bassin Octogonal - Paris by Beausoleil
If you walk up to the Orangerie, there are walkways at the top that let you look out over the Tuileries Gardens on one side and over the Place de la Concorde on the other side. There are also benches to rest your weary feet if you've been walking all day.
Fountain of the Orators in Place Saint-Sulpice by Beausoleil
Variously called Fountain of the Orators, Fontaine Saint-Sulpice and also, in French, "La Fontaine des quatre points cardinaux," which means the "Fountain of the 4 Cardinal Directions," as it faces North, South, East, and West. This name is also a pun, because "points cardinaux" in French is a play on words. It can be understood as "Point Cardinaux" which means "not Cardinals," as all four of the bishops portrayed in the statues, while renown, were never elevated to the position of Cardinal. It is directly opposite Saint-Sulpice Church and is occasionally covered by a fair set up in the square. The annual Poesy Fair was during our current visit. We visited the Poesy Fair many years ago and one of the publishers started talking to me and ended up giving me a book of poetry which I cherish. We didn't have that luck this year but did enjoy the festival. I was also happy to get a photo before they set up the festival since the tents pretty much ruin the view.

Arc de Triomphe and the Obelisk de Louxor from the Tuileries by Beausoleil
Created by Catherine de' Medici as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564, it was eventually opened to the public in 1667 and became a public park after the French Revolution. It is my absolute favorite place in Paris. Yes, I know it is crowded and everyone in Paris eventually walks through it, but I also know you can walk off this main thoroughfare and find a bench all to yourself in a lovely secluded spot and feed the ducks. There is truly something for everyone in the Tuileries including a fun fair in summer, various playgrounds for children, fountains, ponds, ducks, fish, toy sailing boats, cafés, ice cream stands, sculpture, two museums and on occasion, exotic goats mowing the grass. It is just fun and very pretty.

Jardin du Palais Royal - Fountain by Beausoleil
Pierre Fontaine created the ornamental basin in 1817. In 1992 the garden designer Mark Rudkin conceived two green rooms bordered by flower beds. The Centre des Monuments Nationaux which is in charge of running the site has devised a sustainable gardening policy based on respecting natural cycles and planting perennials. The fountain is a perfect place to find a chair and put up your feet on a very hot Paris day.
