Église Saint-Martin de Veules-les-Roses - the rediscovered fresco by Beausoleil
The church dates to the 16th century except for the 18th century bell tower. It hss remarkable carved sandstone pillars as well as a pipe organ from 1628 that is still in working order. In the choir the restoration of the vault in the past few years revealed a remarkable fresco that had been forgotten. It is now on glorious display. The pews are numbered so were presumably assigned. I'm not sure I've seen the numbers before so that was interesting.

Château-Musée-de-Saint-Germain-de-Livet - the Frescoes Room by Beausoleil
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Château de Saint-Germain-de-Livet is located 10 minutes from Lisieux. Surrounded by moats where majestic swans sail, this architectural gem includes a half-timbered manor from the 15th century and a checkerboard construction of stones and glazed bricks from Pré d'Auge from the end of the 16th century. The museum contains the furniture and collections of the family who donated the estate to the city of Lisieux in 1958. An overview of living in the 19th century invites you to discover the artistic and personal career of the painter Léon Riesener, grandson of the cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener and cousin of the famous artist Eugène Delacroix.

Abbaye de Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives by Beausoleil
The Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives was founded in the 11th century. A thousand years later, the abbey church, adjoining convent buildings, the cloister courtyard and chapter house make it one of the most complete sets of monastic architecture in Normandy.

Saint-Vincent Cathedral of Saint-Malo . . . a fresco by Beausoleil
We were visiting Brittany for a week and wanted to revisit Saint-Malo so on a sunny morning we drove northeast to the city. We parked near the ferry port, entered through Porte Dinan and found a nice restaurant for lunch before walking through the Old Town section. It couldn't have been a more perfect Fall day. The church was founded in dedication to Saint Vincent of Saragossa and is a national monument of France. The very modern stained glass is by Jean Le Moal.

Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Church in Pickering by Beausoleil
Saint Peter and Saint Paul's church contains one of the most complete sets of medieval wall paintings in Britain. They were probably first commissioned in 1450 and were painted in the following decade. The paintings depict Saint George slaying the dragon, Saint Christopher carrying the Christ-child, the beheading of John the Baptist, the coronation of the Virgin Mary, the martyrdom of Saint Edmund, the martyrdom of Saint Thomas Becket, the legend of Catherine of Alexandria, the seven Corporal Acts of Mercy, the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ, the Descent into Hell and Christ's Resurrection and Ascension. There is a lot of information about the paintings in the guide book, available in Church. Check the web site to be sure the church is open when you will be there.

Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption also called Notre-Dame de Montcuq by Beausoleil
Eglise Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption also called Notre-Dame de Montcuq is on Google maps as Parish Our Lady of Capelou and is part of that parish but is named as above. The second name is the more historic one. The frescoes inside are amazing. While it is not in Old Town, it is definitely worth the walk (or drive) to visit.

Chapelle St. Michel - Fresco by Beausoleil
Rocamadour is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has also been a pilgrimage site on the 'Way of Saint James" for hundreds of years. It exists on three levels climbing a near vertical cliff. There is an elevator from level 1 to level 2 and an escalator to the top. You may climb 216 steps from level 1 to level 2 (on your knees if you are a pilgrim) and there is a beautiful "Way of the Cross" from level 2 to the top. If you look up and to the right, you see the Sword of Roland thrust into the cliff face.

Eglise St. Peter in Mollégès by Beausoleil
One of the oddest interiors we've seen in France. The painting behind the altar is a very modern, (very lavender) almost tropical mural having not much to do with religion. It's interesting but seems out of place in the old church.

The Château at Castelnaud-la-Chapelle by Beausoleil
This is a marvelous restored château that holds a fun museum of medieval warfare. If you are there in summer, you can see the ancient war machines in use. They also figure in one of the Inspector Bruno novels by Martin Walker that are so much fun.
