Saint-Malo . . . Porte Saint-Vincent by Beausoleil
We were visiting Brittany for a week and wanted to revisit Saint-Malo so on a sunny morning we drove northeast to the city. We parked near the ferry port, entered through Porte Dinan and found a nice restaurant for lunch before walking through the Old Town section. It couldn't have been a more perfect Fall day. We followed this by a ride on the Petit Train and the trip ended at Porte Saint-Vincent where we walked back through town to Porte de Dinan and retrieved our car.

Centre international du vitrail (Stained Glass Museum) - Chartres by Beausoleil
We've visited Chartres many times but this was our first visit to the stained glass museum. I'm not sure why unless it was time constraint that kept us from it before. It's right across from the Cathedral so an easy walk. We both paint so enjoy art and stained glass is magnificent art and often last longer than any other medium. This is an international organization to preserve older stained glass and promote the creation of modern stained glass. They do exhibitions, workshops and all sorts of recovery efforts. They also exhibit modern stained glass.

Beningbrough Hall and Gardens by Beausoleil
Beningbrough Hall is a large Georgian mansion near the village of Beningbrough, North Yorkshire, England, and overlooks the River Ouse. It has baroque interiors, cantilevered stairs, wood carving and central corridors which run the length of the house. Externally the house is a red-brick Georgian mansion with a grand drive running to the main frontage and a walled garden, The house is home to more than 100 portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery. It has a restaurant, shop and garden shop. The Hall is set in extensive grounds and is separated from them by an example of a ha-ha (a sunken wall) to prevent sheep and cattle entering the Hall's gardens or the Hall itself. Outside the main building there is a Victorian laundry and a walled garden with vegetable planting, the produce from which is used by the walled garden restaurant. It includes a wilderness play area, community orchard, an Italianate border and a garden shop.

Castle Howard - the Walled Garden by Beausoleil
Castle Howard has been used in quite a few films and television dramas including "'Lady L" with Sophia Loren in 1965 and "Barry Lyndon" in 1975, "Brideshead Revisited" in 1981 and 2008, the BBC's "Death Comes to Pemberley" in 2013, and recently the television series 'Victoria." There is a room with "Brideshead Revisited" memorabilia that is interesting. There are lakes and gardens, a wonderful garden center, many nice walks, a farm market and lovely fountains. When we were there, the fountains were turned off at three o'clock PM so try to get your photos before then.

Gates outside Sizergh Castle by Beausoleil
There are guided tours for 1 GBP each and then you can return and explore on your own or you can explore only on your own. We took the tour and felt it was a GBP well spent as our guide was excellent. We had lunch and then returned to look through the castle at our leisure which was also fun since we had taken the tour earlier and had more time to look at things in the afternoon.

Lacock Abbey by Beausoleil
Lacock Abbey in County Wiltshire was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as an Augustinian nunnery. It is part of the National Trust village of Lacock that includes the lovely village, the Abbey and the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography. You can visit the ancient ruined Abbey which was used in several Harry Potter films, the attached manor house created after the dissolution of the monasteries and last lived in by William Henry Fox Talbot, the photography museum in the stables, the greenhouses and extensive gardens and even the peaceful sheep pastured by the Abbey.

Stable Mews with a view across the valley by Beausoleil
Lynton, at the top of the cliff, is more like a real town and much less like a tourist stop. There are also great views from many spots here. We walked all over and then visited the small but very nice museum before taking the Cliff Railway back to Lynmouth and our car.
