Driving from Villedieu-les-Poêles to our next gite by Beausoleil
The highways in France are excellent and a good way to get quickly from one place to another. We use smaller roads when we're sightseeing and highways when we have a time constraint.

Driving to Mont-Saint-Michel by Beausoleil
We used the AutoRoute from Bayeux to Mont-Saint-Michel because we wanted to get there quickly and do some sightseeing that day. Normally, we prefer smaller, slower and more picturesque roads, but this was pretty picturesque for an AutoRoute.

Highway from Paris to Bayeux in France by Beausoleil
We landed at CDG in pouring rain, got our leased Peugeot and immediately left for Bayeux where we had originally booked a hotel for September 2019. COVID struck and we had to cancel but rebooked for September of 2020. The virus wasn't finished with all of us, but we were vaccinated and there was a lull between waves of virus so we headed to France for our holiday that had been postponed for a year. It was good to be on the road again.

Driving to Lacock on Prince Harry's Wedding Day by Beausoleil
We had a short drive and were hoping the Royal Wedding would keep traffic near Oxford rather than Lacock. It may have, but there was still enough traffic as the day spent itself. Why weren't these people watching the wedding on tv? We were told the Hawthorn was blooming better than it had in many years. It certainly was beautiful along the roads and fields.

The Paris Peripherique by Beausoleil
A traffic nightmare but it does get you to where you want to go. Our GPS told us to get off at the wrong exit, but there were signs to CDG so we ignored the GPS and followed the signs. A wise decision as it turned out.

Passing the Aire du Bois de Dourre on the A20 by Beausoleil
We had a long drive so decided on the AutoRoute taking A61, A62 and A20 before getting off and into the countryside. It was still a long drive but for a highway, a very pretty drive.

Basque pelota basket (jai lai) in the highway roundabout by Beausoleil
French roundabouts are often decorated and this one in Basque country held a giant pelota basket in reference to the Basque sport evident in all the villages in the area. This one is at Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle on the D918.

The Pyrénées magically appear by Beausoleil
A63 approaching Exit 4 near Bayonee and Biarritz gives you a first view of the Pyrénées after driving through the very flat Landes region.

Driving through the rain near Saint-Jean-d'Angély by Beausoleil
We were driving from the Loire Valley to Bordeaux and managed to drive in and out of rain the entire way. On occasion, it rained quite hard but the scenery was still terrific.

Péage de Montfaucon by Beausoleil
We usually use National and District roads because they are free and have a lot more scenery. However, when we have a very long trip and not that much time, we use the marvelous French AutoRoute. You get what you pay for is no exception here. The roads are excellent and they get you across the country in no time.

Warning Sign on the AutoRoute between Menton and Nice, France by Beausoleil
Digital warning signs are always in French so it is useful to know some of the warnings. Many are listed in the Michelin "France Touring and Motoring Atlas," an excellent source for maps.
