Historic Inns Charleston (2) by romanticgetaway
Today the Governor's House Inn is known for its rich air and conveniences that consolidate current and noteworthy delights. Situated inside strolling separation of all that Charleston has to bring to the table, Governor's House Inn's authentic centrality goes back to the Revolutionary War; with the house being assembled barely 10 years before that period. We welcome you to get familiar with its beginnings, including the site's starting points, the home's fashioner and the sky is the limit from there.

The Rose Inn just before the bridge by Beausoleil
We walked back past The Rose Inn, across the bridge to the Beck Isle Museum, paid and entered. They have a bit of everything including entire rooms and historic shop interiors. The outside features antique farm equipment in the back and a lovely view of the bridge and Pickering Beck (river) in the front. This area was badly flooded in 2007 and there are photographs in the museum of the flooding. It is called Beck Isle because the museum is literally on an island during high water.

The White Swan Inn - Pickering by Beausoleil
Originally built in 1532 as a four-room cottage, it was soon extended and pressed into service as a coaching inn for the York to Whitby stagecoach. The White Swan has been open for business as an inn more or less ever since the 16th century. Two notable exceptions were when it served as the town’s Court House for a brief spell, and during the last War when it served as Pickering Garrison’s NCO Mess. The family running today has owned it since 1953.

Whitestonecliffe Inn by Beausoleil
Driving from Dalton-in-Furness to Pickering we planned to stop for lunch in Thirsk. However, when we arrived, the town water was shut off and the restaurants were either closed or serving cold sandwiches on paper plates, We opted to move on for lunch elsewhere and found Whitestonecliffe Inn at Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe. It was friendly, cozy and had excellent food. Good choice.

You pass the Red Lion going back and forth between the Abbey and the village. We got to know it quite well although we never ventured inside.

The George Inn - Lacock by Beausoleil
Lacock itself dates back to the 13th century and has remained largely unchanged over the centuries with its many lime washed, half-timbered and stone buildings. One of those buildings, The George Inn, established circa 1361 has an amazing history and is famous for its medieval open fire place with a dog wheel that you can see in the top left of the photo. The little dog used to run inside the wheel to turn the very large spit you see in the fireplace to the left. The food is excellent and the service friendly.

The Red Lion Inn by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are St. James Church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. There is a tea room at the Manor House, a snack bar at the Barn Gallery and the Red Lion Inn overlooking the stone circles.

The George Inn - Sandy Lane by Beausoleil
We had driven to Sandy Lane to take pictures of thatched houses for later paintings. We arrived before The George Inn opened so we cheerfully parked in their parking lot and walked through the tiny and very picturesque village taking photos. It is a magical little village.

Eight Bells Inn by Beausoleil
We read someplace that Eight Bells Inn was a good place to eat and when we checked their menu, it looked great. We were parked in a 2-hour spot so had to go retrieve our car and park elsewhere, but as soon as we did that, we headed for Eight Bells and had a delightful lunch. Very friendly and very good food. If you are visiting St. James Church or the Court Barn Museum, it is a very convenient place to eat.

Eight Bells Inn (count them) by Beausoleil
The Eight Bells Inn was originally built in the 14th century to house the stonemasons who built St. James' church. It was later used to store the peel of eight bells that were hung in the church tower hence its name. It is a very warm and friendly inn with excellent food and within easy walk of nearly all sights in Chipping Campden.

The George Inn by Beausoleil
The George Inn dates from 1361 and has a dogwheel inside where a dog used to run and turn the spit in the fireplace. The village of Lacock is a National Trust site and also site of many filmings, including the ever-popular Harry Potter set at Lacock Abbey. There are no overhead wires, satellite dishes nor antennae in town so with a layer of sand or dirt on the street, you are transported back hundreds of years.
