The Petit Palais in Paris with Winston Churchill by Beausoleil
The Petit Palais is the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts. It was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle and is located across from the Grand Palais on Avenue Winston-Churchill. As a city museum, it is free of charge although you will pay for special exhibits. There is an amazingly large and diverse collection of paintings along with furniture, decor and entire rooms on exhibit. There are ancient and medieval works, works from the French and Italian Renaissance and Flemish and Dutch paintings. You will find paintings from major French artists of the 19th century such as Delacroix, Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Courbet among others. A new sculpture exhibit is to open in 2020 although the opening may be delayed by the corona virus lockdown.

Quadriga on The Grand Palais in Paris - One of two by Beausoleil
A quadriga, is typically shown as a chariot powered by four horses and driven by a Greek or Roman figure that represents victory or some other meaning. The Grand Palais has two large copper ones. The two are known collectively as the Récipon Quadrigas. This one, which commands the sky near the Seine, stands for “harmony triumphing over discord.” The two quadrigas are the work of Georges Récipon, who also produced sculptures for the Pont Alexandre-III nearby.

Skipped the 148 steps and walked through Square Louise-Michel on the left by Beausoleil
After lunch we skipped all the steps to the basilica and cut through a pleasant park Square Louise-Michel. At least it would have been quite pleasant if it hadn't started raining very hard. Fortunately we had our trusty umbrellas but still got pretty wet. It was also up, but not on slippery steps.

The Hotel de Ville of Paris (city hall) by Beausoleil
We were walking along the Seine and this was the view. There is always a lot of activity at the Hotel de Ville because they have the fountains, put in a skating rink in winter and have all sorts of shows during the year.

Even the Post Office is picturesque in a Plus Beau Village. We were in Espelette on a very rainy day and it was still beautiful. I'd love to return on a bright sunny day,
