Swans swimming at low tide beside the Lindisfarne Causeway by Beausoleil
I can't resist a swan . . . especially three swans. We were driving across the Lindisfarne Causeway at low tide (the only time you can drive it) and we spotted these three beautiful swans so I snapped their picture out of the car window.

Tide is out - Time to leave Lindisfarne Island by Beausoleil
We spent the night on Holy Island and wished we had another night. Next time . . . When the tide went out the next morning, we drove across the Causeway and headed to the Lake District for another exciting adventure. We were going to stop at Jedburgh Abbey in Scotland on the way.

The Post Office . . . and the Post Office Café on Lindisfarne Island by Beausoleil
This café was suggested to us and we were surprised to find it attached to the real Post Office. I don't think they're connected in any way except by being in the same building, but it was a very good restaurant and we had a lovely lunch there.

This is one of the views of St. Mary's you get from the ruins of The Priory. The storm clouds made it quite dramatic.

Church of Saint Mary the Virgin from inside the Priory ruins on Lindisfarne (Holy Island) by Beausoleil
The church, museum and abbey ruins are intertwined. You see them all as you visit the English Heritage site. You do have to pay to enter the abbey ruins if you aren't a member, but the church is open to all.

View of the Lindisfarne Castle from the Crown and Anchor by Beausoleil
The castle reminds us of Mont Saint Michel in France when seen from a distance. You can easily walk to the castle but somehow whenever you see it from the village, it looks very far away.

Lindisfarne Hotel by Beausoleil
This was a great hotel. It has private parking and is directly off the causeway. You can walk anyplace on the island from here. They have a wonderful breakfast and a café if you need it. The rooms are large, clean and very comfortable. The owners are happy to welcome you with a cup of tea and a map of the island with suggestions for sightseeing. We loved it.

Excellent small museum tracing the island history with exhibits on the Vikings, the ancient Christian monks, the fishing industry and birding. There is a facsimile of the Lindisfarne Gospels and an interactive exhibit that lets you look through the Lindisfarne Gospels on a computer. (The actual Lindisfarne Gospel is in the British Museum if you want to see the original.) This was an interactive display where you could make a rubbing using Lindisfarne designs.

Rainbow driving to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) by Beausoleil
We left Thirsk trying to beat the tide to Lindisfarne Island and managed to see three rainbows along the way. We did beat high tide and drove safely to the island.
