We walked past the Louvre on our way to the Metro stop going home after a long and very fun day in Paris.

Chasing bubble in front of the Louvre by Beausoleil

There are now lots of vendors and street artists around the Louvre. This fellow was creating giant soap bubbles and the kids were chasing them. It was fun to watch.

Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel near the Louvre by Beausoleil

Terrasse des Feuillants along rue de Rivoli by Beausoleil

They set up a fun fair here in the summer but the rest of the year it is open to exploration and pleasant crowd-free walks in the Tuileries Gardens. It isn't easy to escape the crowds here no matter what time of year but early June is quite busy and this is a lovely escape.

The Pei Pyramid at the Louvre by Beausoleil

These people were standing in line for no reason since they closed the museum soon after I took the picture. There was a surfeit of visitors and the staff was overwhelmed so they sent everyone home and closed the museum for the rest of the day. We discovered this when we simply could not get tickets. There was a tent set up for people who already had their tickets and long lines there. The lines in the photo are people waiting at the Pyramid who didn't have tickets and wanted to visit. This was a far longer line and one we didn't join. We left to go explore a taxi strike on the same day. That prevented our bus from going anywhere but the Metro was still running so we did get home.

South Entrance to the Louvre from the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel - Paris by Beausoleil

There are two entrances to the Louvre on the north and south sides of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. They are hard to see because there is only the low cement wall surrounding them and your eye is taken by the huge Arc de Triomphe standing between them with the attendant crowds. With the exception of the Lion's Gate (when it is open and when it is not just for a special group), these are the two quickest entrances . . . but not on this day. The employees of the Louvre were overcome with visitors that day and just gave up. The closed the museum, sent everyone home and left. It was a mini-strike and they reopened the next day but they had made their point. The next thing we ran into was a taxi strike stopping traffic all over the city so we couldn't use our bus either. Fortunately, the Metro was still running.

The Lion's Gate - Closed and Padlocked by Beausoleil

Our favorite entrance to the Louvre was closed and padlocked because the disgruntled employees staged a walkout that day. Those who got in were asked to leave so we were glad we didn't get in that time. Attendance at the museum has gone up 30% and they have cut staff. Needless to say, this has caused great stress. We didn't blame them for the walkout but were sorry to miss seeing the museum that day. Fortunately we'd seen it many times before but it's always a highlight for us so we'll try again later.

Pont des Arts from Square du Vert-Galant by Beausoleil

The Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts is a pedestrian bridge in Paris which crosses the Seine River. It links the Institut de France and the central square of the Palais du Louvre. Since people putting "love locks" on it caused part of the railings to fall off the bridge in 2014, the railings have been replaced with plexiglass panels so locks can't be hung there any more. Of course now people are hanging the silly locks all over fences and bridges in the rest of the city now despite all the authorities do to discourage them . . . or encourage them to find a substitute activity to declare their undying love.

Musée du Louvre from Square du Vert-Galant by Beausoleil

I've always loved Picasso's painting of the little Square du Vert-Galant so enjoy visiting the tiny park on an island in the Seine. There is a short walk around the park and on the northern side you can see the back of the Louvre from the park. You can get the Vedettes du Pont Neuf for a cruise on the Seine from this small island. However, few tourists visit the park beyond the Vedettes boarding site so it's a private and quiet place in Paris. There are many of those and they are often in parks.

Carrousel du Louvre shopping center by Beausoleil

A large, very nice shopping center in the center of Paris directly underneath the Louvre Museum. There is also an entrance to the Louvre from here and a very nice museum store.
