Nunnington Hall by Beausoleil
Nunnington Hall is a beautiful Elizabethan manor house situated on the edge of the North York Moors. The river Rye runs past the house, flowing away from the village of Nunnington. A stone bridge over the river separates the grounds of the house from the village. The Hall stands within 8 acres of organically managed grounds. The Walled Garden contains lawns, orchards, formal rose beds, mixed borders, a Tea Garden, and an Iris Garden. The orchards are managed as wildflower meadows growing below the fruit trees of which most are traditional Ryedale varieties. Another feature of the gardens are the resident peacocks. Inside the 17th-century manor house you can visit the magnificent oak-paneled hall, family rooms, the nursery, the haunted room and the attics, with the famous Carlisle collection of miniature rooms fully furnished to reflect different periods. We were also fortunate enough to see an exhibit of watercolors by David Birtweistle.

Holker Hall from the Gardens by Beausoleil
After touring the Hall, you exit into the beautiful gardens. The gardens nearest the house are quite formal and become less so as you move out into the grounds. The Cascade and Burlington Fountain were highlights for me although it is all lovely.

Holker Hall by Beausoleil
Holker Hall, home of the Cavendish Family, has never been bought or sold but passed by inheritance through just three families: the Prestons, the Lowthers and the Cavendishes, with each generation leaving its impression by either altering the landscape or by changing the house by adding, refacing, embellishing or even rebuilding, as happened to the New Wing after the disastrous fire of 1871. There is an excellent display about the famous fire. We took a tour in the morning, had lunch there and wandered the Hall and Gardens by ourselves in the afternoon.

Sundial at Avebury Manor by Beausoleil
The world's largest stone circle surrounds a small village. Within the village are the church, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum that is arranged in two parts, the Stables Gallery that displays archaeological treasures from this World Heritage Site and the Barn Gallery that is a 17th-century threshing barn that houses interactive displays. When you exit the house, you enter the gardens. They vary according to time of year as gardens must and we were there in May when there was not yet much in bloom. It was still very pretty and obvious that later visitors would have quite a treat.
