Frank Whittle Memorial by DAOonVT
Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle (OM, KBE, CB, FRS, Hon FRAeS) is arguably the inventor of the turbojet engine. He joined the RAF and quickly developed a reputation for low flying and crashing panes. Despite this at the age of 23 he took out a patent on his jet engine design in 1930. It was submitted to the Air Ministry for consideration. They noted an incorrect calculation and determined hat the jet engine was not practical. In Germany Hans von Ohain obtained a patent in 1936 for a jet engine, received support and actually built jets. Germany had actual combat jets in World War II, the only country to do so. Frank Whittle first ran his own prototype in 1937, but had to from private company to fund development. The company, Power Jets, was nationalised in 1943. Whittle had a nervous breakdown, but was knighted. The roundabout where this monument is located is within several miles of the various factories Whittle used to work on his designs.
